Since early last fall, John has made space available on www.lighthousekeepers.com for us to store our image files to be shared here in the forums. Thought you might be interested in some figures from the first four months of operation:

42 people have made use of the space, uploading a total of 809 image files. The busiest uploaders:

Gary Martin with 180
Paul Brady with 123
Dennis Whelan with 76
John Chidester with 68

While most of us have space available to store files at our ISP, the space John has donated lets you keep that space for whatever other uses you have. You have all been encouraged to share your photos with you Forum Family, and have answered that challenge in a big way! We have seen a major influx of great pictures over the past several months. Thanks to all who have shared their photos.

A special thanks to John for providing the space for all of us to use!

Instructions on How to Upload Images can be found here .

I must apologize for not taking advantage of the wonderful offer of free storage space for photos. I've had such good luck with my FTP Space at AOL that I hadn't thought of using anything else.

Now that I have my new 4 megapixel camera, I will need more room for storage. You will see me visiting and utilizing the free space in the very near future.

Happy New Year everyone!

Bob and others,

Please remember that pictures that you want to link to need to be compressed at the high end. The size of a file you need to print out a photo and the size you need to display on the internet have very little relation. Remember that the computer monitor is about 72dpi, not 2,3, 4 or 5 megapixels. You need to resize the pictures to about 500-550 pixels on the longest dimension and ensure they are compressed. Files should end up <100k. Most seem to be in the 60k-75k size range. Keeping the files to this size range keeps things manageable.

Folks with dial-up connections can experience incredibly long waits while a 1 or 2 meg photo downloads, and it won't look that much better than if it had been compressed in jpeg format. The longer a thread of pictures gets, the more problems a large photo file causes.

Do use the space, it is a wonderful opportunity if you don't have FTP space on your ISP or if it is dedicated to a personal web page.

Happy uploading,

Dave

Thanks for the info, Dave. Most every picture I post at the CF has a number of 500 or less pixels. I think they look better and you don't have to scroll in other directions to see the whole thing at once.
