WOW! Some great new HLs! Of course, Sherwood Point is my favorite, but Old Michigan City, Portsmouth, and Cleveland aren't far behind. I better start volunteering to be "on call" more nights. I love the stories under the lighthouses.

I'll tell ya right now that Long Beach is one of the "Wow!'er" of the "Wow!™"'s. What a brilliant creative concept.

Too many GLOWS! (although my dealer will go nuts over Pemaquid).

Overall, very nice...but where are dealers going to put 'em all??

What a great lineup! The latest offerings from Harbour Lights will give everyone something to look for throughout the remainder of 2001! I think the Bug Light is the biggest surprise. Once again, HL continues to amaze its collectors!

There are some great looking pieces to look forward to. I am very pleased to see the Long Beach Bar piece . That will be a nice addition to my copllection. Cedar Key and Portsmouth Harbor are also very nice.

I like the look of the GLOW's, especially Pemaquid Point.

Wow is right. Looks like HL has been busy! I just gotta have the Bremerhaven- GERMANY piece. The Long Beach Bar piece is very interesting with the construction crane.

I asked BY at the Akron signing this past Sunday if Cleveland light was in the works, and with a twinkle in his eye (you know THAT twinkle) and a wry smile on his face he said,"Could be". Now I know, and have to have it!

Every year I tell myself to just buy the ones you really like. Guess what, every year I buy every limited edition. Looking at the new releases, I'll be buying each and every one. My wife is going to kill me. All kidding aside, these new releases look fantastic!

The new releases look great! However, Long Beach Bar is a double WOW! Cleveland, Sullivans Island and East Point are also very nice.

Having hung out at the beach and swum in the shadows of Sullivans Island while I was growing up, I can say it will be a sentimental favorite of mine (and my family). Hmmm...guess what my mom and sisters are going to get for Christmas this year! THANKS!

Being that we generally only buy the ones we've seen, the only two we'd qualify for are Sherwood Point and Old Mich. City. But I gotta tell ya, I'm going to make an exception for L.A.Harbor and Long Beach Bar light. How can you pass up a Harbour Light and an Anchor Bay on the same piece! Although I have to wonder if the barge crane actually lifted the whole roof off the lighthouse? That would probably be tough, but certainly not impossible. Not complaining though, H.L. seems to out do themselves every year!

The sculpture was modeled from actual pictures taken when the lighthouse was rebuilt in 1990. Yes, that scene actually happened. The lighthouse was built in a shipyard in three pieces in 60 days. It was assembled on site in one day. There's a story of a fisherman from Conn who went by the foundation in the morning and remarked "How there use to be a wonderful lighthouse there". That afternoon he returned to see a lighthouse and reportedly sought the help of a shrink "after not believing his eyes".

Ah, that makes a little more sense. I thought it was supposed to be taking the old roof off in one piece, and that would have been difficult. I guess if you build it to be put together like a kit, you can crane it like that. Makes me want to get the piece even more now that I know it's accurate.

All are stunning, but the two destined for the curio are Portsmouth and Eastpoint (been there, seen them, must have them) - the closet is waiting for the imposters (can't mention names) who are holding their spot open!.

Personally, I can't believe HL came out with an Eastpoint - I think it's really great. That lighthouse was an adventure to find and see.

Portsmouth Harbor and Long Beach are awesome. I love Charleston and Cedar Keys, too. I can't wait to add them to my collection!!!!!

I'm so glad I got to see Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse this year...by land and water...it's really such a great lighthouse with the Fort and all too! ...and yes, WOW! for Long Beach Bar...What a great concept for a piece! Speaking of the Bug Light - last night myself and about 30 other folks got to take a cruise past the Long Beach Bar Light (actually, we were supposed to go inside, but some red tape prevented that). It really is a beautiful lighthouse, and I'm even more excited about getting the HL restoration piece (we ordered ours on Thursday!).

On the return trip, we got to see the Bug Light at work (previously, I had only gone by the lighthouse during the day).

Bug Light (the Harbour Lights piece) looks great in person. There is a clear lucite rod that holds the roof apart from the first floor About 3/8" in diameter and about 1/2" separating the two pieces.

Harbour Lights has again raised the bar on this piece. The barge has the rusty look, the lantern room sits proudly on the barge, awaiting it's turn to 'cap off' the 'new-old' Long Beach Bar Lighthouse.

It might be a minor point, but there seems to be a small error in the description of the Sullivan's Island piece.

The copy on the HL Catalog page states that Sullivan's Island is the only Lighthouse in the United States with an elevator. The following link seems to contradict that. It establishes that there is an elevator at Oak Island.

Only one of them can be right. I've gone to all the sites on the index of Internet sites relevant to Oak Island and done a search and found nothing that refers to an elevator there. I did find one site that had a t-shirt that included some of the plans for construction of Oak Island. I saw only stairs on that, but it was only one of the drawings for the blueprints.

Is it possible that the elevator was installed at some later date.

Anybody have any information on that?

In my handbook , "North Carolina Lighthouses",by Cheryl Shelton-Roberts and Bruce Roberts, states that Oak Island has "134 steps to the lantern gallery."
I've been there, but have not climbed it, and don't know if one even is allowed....but there are steps.

I think... I now have the complete answer to the elevator mystery...

I just called the Oak Island station and the difference is that Sullivan's elevator can carry passengers while the Oak Island elevator can only carry parts to the top. I was probably the one that got confused at the time that we were there. I thought the gentleman stated that it could take people to the top.

The Coast Guard gentleman on the phone today said that it is used to send parts to the top so that they don't have to carry them on the climb, as it is a difficult climb.

I am sorry if I have caused any confusion over this issue. It is accurate that Sullivan's Island has the only passenger elevator but it is not the only lighthouse with an elevator.

Here's another piece of trivia for those that have not ridden the elevator in Sullivan's Island (Charleston Light). It's elevator doesn't go all the way to the top! There's a joke for somebody. The last 15ft or so you have to climb a ladder to the top to enter the lantern room. For those of you that have been inside of Hilton Head (Sea Pines, Sullivan's Island is of very similar construction. It is a steel skeletal tower held together by wire and turnbuckles with metal sheeting applied to it's exterior. When at the top on a windy day you can feel the tower swaying in the wind.

Sue says she still remembers the gentleman saying that they do use it for people on special occasions only such as a barbecue that they hold a couple of times a year and invite the public.

I am going to search through all of my old notes and information to see if I can locate the young man's e-mail address that took us for the tour and find out once and for all just what he told us last year. It would be quite a ride if they do use it for people... just cables going up the center of the tower.

I will track him down if possible...

Thanks to Jakers for adding another Door County Lighthouse to the line. That leaves only six to go. And one of them just happens to be Pottawatomie on Rock Island.
Where have we heard that name Pottawatomie before?

Wasn't that the name of the Indian tribe that settled Chicago? Seems like I heard the recording on our boat trip Sunday....can't think of where else I have heard that name tho'! Jim do you remember if we heard it anywhere else while we were in Chicago? Are you sure you have the correct Indian spelling?

There are variations out there. I hope that if they ever do this light, it will be done the correct way.

Did someone mention the new release of a Currituck, NC" HL#436 ?

I received my new brochure yesterday from the Lighthouse Depot which shows all the new HL's for the remaining of 2001, all of which have been discussed on the forums before. However, with delight, I noticed the Currituck on the brochure which surely surprised me! I just wish that the open edition version would have also included the keepers house as the limited edition HL#158 does.

Either way....its very much needed and SOLD! We now desperatly need an "Ocracoke, NC" to be released in the open edition line.

Man, I have been a way for a while trying to find a job. I have missed being able to check in with you all, and I could not believe my eyes when I checked the HL web site and saw the new pieces. I say a belated "WOW" with the rest of you. I am so glad that they brought out the Cleveland piece. I hate to admit this but I "almost" caved in and bought that piece from a competitor. I am glad I have waited. All the new pieces look great. I also have to say I was amazed with the detail on all of them especially with the "Bug Light"!

Anyway, I just wanted to chime in with the rest of you and say "Way to Go Harbour Lights"!

Now I have just got to find that job so I can start collecting again.

I have been looking at the photo of the new pieces and the 2 pictures.Is it my imagination or is Sullivans island really a huge piece as it looks in this picture?The tower is very tall and the house looks like a hotel.This is not critisism I have my order in for it.To me it looks like it could about the biggest piece yet,I am really looking forwar to actually seeing itim August.The brochure insert gives the size as 7"x8"and the bug is only 6"x6"this looks like a real WOWWWWWWW!!!!!!! Bill, after seeing Sullivan's Island up close and personal in Chicago, it is a big piece! HL did it up right on this one! After seeing this one in South Carolina, it isn't the nicest light to look at. Harbour Lights made it really nice though. Should be a big seller!
