I had found this website when I was looking for ways to see lighthouses in the New Hampshire area, being that the best view for most of them is from the water. http://www.islesofshoals.com/ They have a lighthouse cruise where you can see five lighthouses that are in close proximity to Portsmouth, New Hampshire: Portsmouth Harbor (Fort Constitution) Light, Whaleback Light, White Island Light, Boon Island Light, and Cape Neddick (Nubble) Light http://www.islesofshoals.com/lighthouse.html This lighthouse tour only runs on specific dates though and in the summer mainly. So, when we were in Portsmouth two weeks ago, the cruise wasn't available...but a historic tour of Portsmouth Harbor and the Isle of Shoals was running (it seems to run twice daily during the summer...I know it does at least on the weekends in May), which includes views of three of the previously mentioned lighthouses: Whaleback, Portsmouth Harbor, and White Island. http://www.islesofshoals.com/sta_ios.html It was a 2 1/2 hour cruise, and I would definitely recommend it. Eventhough it seems that we missed out on 2 lighthouses, it really only ended up being just one as far as more of an up close viewing. We were still able to see Cape Neddick (Nubble) Lighthouse by land - It was only about a 20-25 minute ride north from Portsmouth, New Hampshire...and from Cape Neddick, you can see Boon Island in the distance, across the water...too bad I didn't bring the binoculars. We also went to Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse by land. I would definitely recommend seeing this lighthouse by land if you can because it is located basically right next to Fort Constitution. You have to go through the fort to see the lighthouse. It is really neat, and if you have any "I'm not a lighthouse person" people with you, it's a lot more to see than just a lighthouse. Here are some pictures: Portsmouth Harbor (Fort Constitution) Lighthouse http://scroope.net/newhampshirelighthouses/portsmouthharbor.htm White Island (Isles of Shoals) Lighthouse http://www.scroope.net/newhampshirelighthouses/whiteisland.htm Whaleback Lighthouse http://scroope.net/mainelighthouses/whaleback.htm Cape Neddick http://scroope.net/mainelighthouses/capeneddick.htm [This message has been edited by kscroope (edited 05-27-2001).] |
