Lighthouse Preservation Societies - 06/20/00 07:15 PM

I was curious as to how many lighthouses had formal groups that sponser them and collect donations for preservation. There are many individual threads about specific groups, but it gets hard to follow them all. I was hoping people might use this thread to consolidate the information and spread the word about their favorite lighthouse preservation group. This may also give us some ideas about the 2001 Wacko pin project. If available, please post some contact information or internet links to homepages so that those of us who want to donate can readily do so.

Please visit the Internet Index of Lighthouse Links.

Look for the word SAVE next to the listings. These are the 'official' sites for groups trying to save a specific lighthouse.

Re: Lighthouse Preservation Societies - 06/21/00 05:20 AM

With all due respect John...my purpose was to try to consolidate information to make it easier to find. Also it becomes more personal if those among us have a particular connection with a specific group. First, I went to that index page you posted and there are way too many links to efficiently seek specific societies unless you had an awful lot of time. Second if you look for just "Save" you might miss out on some groups that don't have "Save" in the title...such as the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse Preservation Society (a very nice link by the way!). So if you have a interest in a particular lighthouse, please post it here. I know its not much, but I pledge $10 to the each of the next 10 lighthouses perservation groups posted...well the next 8 since Hudson-Athens and Morris Island are posted Anyone care to match it???

Re: Lighthouse Preservation Societies - 06/21/00 05:42 AM

That's fine, Doc...

Just a correction. The word 'SAVE' does not need to appear in the name of the web site. It is based on my review of each of the web site pages that are linked to determine how to classify them.

Correction noted...now care to match my challenge?

Great idea to put all the preservation societies for lights in one place. It would definitely make it faster and easier to access them. Your LINKS are terrific, John, but I have just spent 15 minutes trying to find info on St. George and Rockland and it didn't work for me. Part of the problem could be that I am using a webtv and it can't access some of your info on the LINKS section. Could you maybe put a permanent list somewhere faster to find? I suggested to Doc John that maybe a new Forum topic could be started just for PRESERVATION. He might enjoy being its moderator and it might bring more attention to the whole preservation scene for all readers on the Forums.

Here is as much info as I could find in a newsletter for:

Friends of the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, P.O Box 741, Rockland, ME 04841 *** Can someone supply their website -- if any?

St George's Reef Lighthouse Preservation Society, P.O. Box 577, Crescent City, CA 95531

I think that if you will read back through this forum, that you will find that the forum is already in place right here for information about Societies and restoration projects. IMO we have too many different forums already and this forum will serve fine as it has already done in the past for this information. Perhaps Doc can compile the list in one thread in this forum at a future time and then just update the list as more are added.

Re: Lighthouse Preservation Societies - 06/22/00 09:13 PM

Have y'all thought this through?

Information's not very useful if you can't retrieve it they way you want or need to see it. Neither a new Forum topic nor a thread under an existing one will be indexed, thus some searches will be impossible after a few hundred links are added. For instance, how would you go about locating the preservation societies in Maine? Or on the Gulf Coast? Knowwhatimean?

The IILL (Internet Index of Lighthouse Links) is indexed in a number of very useful different ways (by region, by name, by state, etc.) which makes finding whatever you're looking for lots easier once you get it downloaded into your cache. In addition, there's a legend which shows what type of information can be found at the hyperlink destination. That is, a preservation society link or U.S. Coast Guard information link or maybe a link to pictures someone took while on vacation, etc. Please see St. John's earlier post as regards the legends or better yet, go look at the IILL itself.

Re: Lighthouse Preservation Societies - 06/22/00 09:53 PM

This is very true...trying to locate the St. George thread proved difficult. Once the posts disappear they can be hard to find. I was going to suggest a forum category devoted to Preservation groups. I think one can do a search of just a particular category to pull up all the posts. New people joining can then see what had been posted in the past in a little bit more organized manner. It may not be a good idea but I thought I would throw it out there. If you have an opinion go here:

Re: Lighthouse Preservation Societies - 06/23/00 01:07 AM

As an aside, there have now been 10 societies posted and I will soon be $100 poorer.

While this thread itself may not be of benefit in the long run because it will be ultimately be fading away into the pergatory of old posts, my intentions were good. The important thing is to try to spread the word about these groups...especially lesser known ones who are newly forming and don't necessarily have web sites or a big voice yet. If you're not sure if its been posted before...don't worry and post it anyway, GOOD NEWS IS WORTH REPEATING!

If you have an association with a particular group, I think you should plug away periodically in the context of your posts (go ahead and be shameless, its for a good cause). For example, the next time someone posts a topic like... "Top 10 Favorite Harbour Lights with a Palm Tree" and you reply "New Point Loma" or "Cape Florida"...think about adding a weblink or contact information to a preservation society of your favorite lighthouses in the context of your post.
