El Morro, San Juan, Puerto Rico

The light at the old fort is great and would make a great piece. It would also be a US light. Just think of the lights in the US Virgin Islands, Guam and other US ports not on CONUS. This could be a entirely new area.

I have been requesting this lighthouse for the past 5 years.

I was in San Juan the end of January. Here are a couple pictures from the San Juan lighthouse at El Morro.

Beautiful pictures Lorie! My Mom and Dad were there many years ago. I know they took pictures of their trip, probably slides. Guess I'll have to look for them sometime to see if they got the lighthouse!

Thanks for the pic's, I couldn't find mine. I lived in San Juan for 5 years and loved visiting that light. I took everyone who visited me there, the view from there is great. Maybe with two of us we might see it done or we might get lucky and have our name pulled from the hat for our choice.

El Morro is a great choice! I was just there last week.

After a 7 day Carribean cruise, we spent 3 days in Puerto Rico. My main reason for extending our stay was to visit the lighthouses there. Unfortunately we only got to see 5/15 of the lights.

El Morro was very nice and is definitely unique.

Cabo Rojo is a shame. Lots of graffiti and vandalism. Spectacular view and location. There are salt flats in the area. Lots of shore birds. Nice beach used by the locals. Lots of potential here. I hope this lighthouse gets restored...

The light is a sight of contrast sitting up there on those very old looking walls.
I like it, I think it would be a very good choice.

That entire fort is a gas . It is a must see if you are in San Juan for any length of time. I glad you were able to enjoy your time there.

Welcome Tammy! Sounds like you had a very nice trip. If you're able to post some pictures of the lights you saw I'm sure we'd enjoy seeing them.

Besides the lights I visited in Puerto Rico (El Morro, Arecibo,Punta Higuero Light in Rincon, Cabo Rojo, Punta Tuna-from afar), I saw a few others on the cruise, but I didn't get close to them. Do I get to count them? Moule a Chique Lighthouse in St. Lucia, a light off Buck Island in St. Thomas, one in Barbados (I haven't found the name yet), and possibly one in Antigua that I don't know if it really was a lighthouse. (I can't find any info on it.)

I'm 38 years old (am I getting too personal?), but my passion for lighthouses only developed about 6 years ago. So, my list is not that impressive YET. I don't count any lighthouses I saw prior to then. Here's the rest of my list:
MN: Split Rock (went 11/10 when they lit it), Duluth, Two Harbors
WI: 7 of the Door County lights
CA: Pigeon Point, Alcatraz, Point Bonita, Point Montara, Point Pinos, Old Point Loma
WA: Admiralty Head, Mukilteo, Lime Kiln, Cattle Point
HI: Kilauea
Canada: Fisgard

My Harbour Lights collection is much greater than the # of lights I've been to. I'm hoping to add a lot more when I take a trip to the UP in Michigan in the fall.

Although I love taking pictures, that doesn't mean I'm very good at it. The scanned images also don't appear as crisp as my prints. My best pictures in Puerto Rico were of a couple of bulls...

I would like to post some pictures if I can figure out how.

As for how you go about counting Lighthouses as seen- we apply the term seen very liberally here.

If you saw it, could tell it was a Lighthouse and can later (or at the time) identify it you can count it. does not matter if it was seen with your eyes only or with the help of binoculars or camera lens.

Of course, the closer you can get to a Lighthouse the better, but many it is impossible to do without a plane, boat or in some cases special permission.

You've got to take what you can on some and hope you get a better look at the next one.

I've "seen" 167, but probably 1/3 of them were distant views. What is even more telling is that probably 110 were not able to be entered (either at all or not when I was there).

That's the breaks of Lighthousing.

Keep it up, it grows on you.

Thanks for the instructions. I'll give it a try. I can tell the file size. However, I don't know how to tell if the photo is 72 dpi. (You wouldn't know that I work with computers for a living, would you.)

I took a picture almost identical to the 2nd one Lorrie posted above. So, here's a different view. The top of the tower appears wavy in the scanned image for some reason. My printed photo does not.

Oops. Somehow I posted the previous message twice. I'm editing it to see if I can add some photos of Cabo Rojo.

Cabo Rojo is in bad shape. The location is great. I hope this light gets restored.

Great Pictures, they have provided the motivation for me to rummage through my house again looking for mine. We packed everything when we moved here 5 years ago and have not unpacked all of our pictures yet. We figured that we would organize them all in albums someday (major job). It is amazing how someday never arrives. One thing is for sure if anyone from Harbour Lights sees these pictures they will have to agree that it would make a great LE light. If my name gets pulled from the hat El Morro will be my choice hand down.

Tammy some pictures are better than others like some lighthouses you see are closer than others. They all count, lol! Go ahead and count the lights you saw prior to becoming passionate about them. Why not, you might not get there again. Just last week I discovered a photo I'd taken many years ago of Portland Head. I knew I'd been there but not that I had taken the picture. I also found one I had taken of the lighthouse at the Mystic Seaport Museum. I see now that my ability to cut off the tops of the towers is not recently acquired!
