Market Ticker II - 05/03/00 07:40 PM

This is a continuation of the Market Ticker thread.

Click here to see the thread that started it all.

The old way of linking each month in this section is no longer working properly. Apparently, PhotoPoint doesn't like me posting high-res charts here without their ad banners, so they miniaturize my charts when I link to them directly. I have provided a new link below to the album that has all the charts. Clicking on this link will open the PotoPoint album page. Click on the month you are interested in. It will open with a low-res image. Click on the image on the PhotoPoint page and a full resolution, full size chart should open. Sorry for the inconvenience, but hey, what do you want for nothin'?

Here's the new link.

Click here to download the Excel 5.0 Spreadsheet with all data. I update this last file a couple of times per week (usually), so if you want the latest, download the spreadsheet. If you want a good idea about what the going price is for any of the pieces tracked, check out the graphs for each piece. Nothing tells the story like a picture. The graphs are a part of the spreadsheet. Access the graphs by clicking on the tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet. They're arranged by HL model number.

How 'bout including year-to-date averages?

Re: Market Ticker II - 09/13/00 07:55 AM

Tim, I fixed the image size for you.

I agree that the YTD numbers are more important than those of any one month. I encourage all to download the spreadsheet (last link in the first posting in this thread) and look at the graphs. One can easily estimate not only the average for the year (by eyeballing an imaginary centerline through all the data points), but you can also spot trends, highs, lows, etc. easily this way as well. Importantly, looking at the graph puts the data into time-ordered context -- something that a chart of numbers doesn't do well. That is why I have chosen to present the data as I have.

How 'bout taking a peek? Then we can chat about what it is (if anything) that we are seeing there.

Re: Market Ticker II - 09/13/00 09:15 PM

I've noticed Ebay prices way down this month! Everybody's spending on back to school. There are a lot of seasonal trends that you'll be able to show after a time.
Posted By: orv

Re: Market Ticker II - 09/14/00 02:40 PM

We saw the same downward trend this time last year on ebay. I think we discussed it here or in another topic at the time. Seems to be a seasonal thing. If the money if available, it is a good time to buy. They will go up the closer it gets to Christmas.

Apparently, PhotoPoint doesn't like me posting high-res charts here without their ad banners, so they miniaturize my charts when I link to them. For you feeble-sighted folks, please try the link below. The PhotoPoint album page will open. Click on the month you are interested in. It will open with the same low-res image you see above. Sorry, Netscape users. It seems this high-res strategy only works with Microsoft Internet Explorer, at least on my machine.

Re: Market Ticker II - 11/04/00 12:29 AM

Art, thanks for all you work in tracking these prices. It is very valuable when you are in the market for something to have some solid data to go by. Is it possible to add one column to the end of each monthly chart? If you could add the average price of your total data for each lighthouse to the monthly chart it would be useful without downloading the updated spreadsheet each month. Thanks again.
PS I was lucky enough to win that $127.50 Cape Neddick and it came broken in the mail!

Re: Market Ticker II - 11/04/00 01:20 AM

Hey JJ, ...Broken in the mail? That's sad...

I've been very lucky with pieces that have come through the mail. The only thing I ever received that broke was the Anchor Bay Purse Seiner, Tori Dawn. It is my belief this happend because of poor packing procedures. Needless to say, the seller graciously gave me a credit on my Mastercard when I shipped the remains back to South Carolina. Nothing ventured...nothing gained...

Oh no JJ... I'm so sorry to hear that, and such a great deal on Cape Neddick too. I do hope it was properly insured. Insurance or not though, it's going to be hard to come across another deal like that. I'll keep a lookout for you!

Re: Market Ticker II - 11/04/00 05:17 PM

Great find on a great piece, JJ. I'm so sorry about the breakage.

The average really doesn't change that much from month to month on most pieces, so I'm not sure it would be worth the extra effort to calculate and add that extra column every month. However, there are months when significant anomolies occur, so I'll grant that using the current month's average isn't always the best guage. Since this is not the first time that this has been suggested, I am considering doing something about it, but I probably won't do it monthly.

My current thought is to do a year-end summary once the December data are in. Then I will add the last year's average for each piece to all future charts for comparison. That will be a static column, month-to-month. I may update it annually, semi-annually or maybe even quarterly (if I feel ambitious or if significant market changes are apparent), but not monthly.

Again, my intent here never was to set prices on individual pieces so much as to take the pulse of the market overall.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Re: Market Ticker II - 11/10/00 02:15 PM

Direct from Tim's spreadsheet:

c) The Fog Signal Value Factor applies to Retired Pieces and equals 'Days on Market at Retirement minus Days Since Retirement'.
d) The Argand Wick Factor applies to Retired Pieces and factors in their Edition Size. It equals The Fog Signal Value Factor divided by Edition Size times 1000.

Sorry for the delay in posting these data. I know you've all been checking here daily to see if I've updated yet (tic). Heck, with Christmas right around the corner, I know that no one has anything else to do.

It's a poor excuse, I know, but I've been bedridden with the flu for the last week and a half. Feeling well enought this morning to drag my carcass to the PC, I made this my first priority.
