These Forums have several features:

  • Registration is required to post messages. Registration is free. You complete the registration form and a temporary password is emailed immediately to the e-mail address you provide. You can then sign back on and edit your profile, including your password.

  • You are able to edit your own messages after posting. Update what you said or correct a typo, for example.  For the first 50 posts you make, you will be identified as a "Newbie". After 50, you will be identified as a "Wacko". Read the "Forum on these forums" for more information on how these terms came to be.

  • Forums have moderators  (called "Cruise Directors")  Moderators can edit and delete messages not appropriate to their forums.

  • The Collector Forums have Administrators (Called "Saints") who can add new forums delete old forums, edit any message, and reconfigure the forums.

  • When you post a message, you can choose to receive notification when a response has been posted to your message.

  • The forums are set up so that you can add to another person's message, creating a 'thread' that is related. For example, a discussion on your favorite Harbour Lights, or where the year 2001 reunion should be held. Moderators can close threads to prevent further posting to them. When a thread reaches 50 messages, we usually close the thread and open a continuation of it in a new thread.

  • If your post does not pertain to an existing message, then you should choose the "Add A Topic", rather than "Post Reply".

  • There are currently 25 forums, each with a special purpose. Please post in the appropriate forum and do NOT post the same message in more than one forum.

  • When you re-visit the forums, you'll see an indication of which forums have messages that you have not yet read. From the main list of forums, you'll see a 'lit' lighthouse. For one of the forum directories, the folder that contains an un-read posting will be red. These lights are turned on an off based on a 'cookie' that is placed on your computer. The cookie tells us the date and time you last visited the forums. This allows the system to decide which messages have been posted since your last visit and display the lights accordingly. If you set your browser to refuse cookies, then you will see ALL the lights lit each time you visit.

  • You can 'imbed' a URL of a web page within your message like this: precede your message with and end it with . There should be no space between the and the http://... of the web page you are linking to. Note the forward slash in the ending .  The message as you type it would look like this:

    http://www.myplace.com/home.htm

  • You can imbed a picture that exists on the web by using the before and after the reference to the picture's URL. Note that IMG links MUST include the "http://" before the "www.myplace.com" . For links to other sites you may omit the "htp://".

  • Similarly you can imbed a mailto link by using and before and after the email address:

    [MAIL]chidester@mindspring.com[/MAIL]

Please do NOT bring images into the forums that you did not make. If you see a picture another photographer took that is elsewhere on the web that you want to share with other collectors, Use the to create a LINK to the page that image is one (not to the image). Bringing images onto the forum pages that you did not take is a violation of copyright law.

If you have questions on how to use features in the forums, post your questions in the 'FORUM ON THIS FORUM' board.

Messages posted here should be appropriate to the subject of Lighthouses and Harbour Lights. All other posts are subject to deletion.
