Here's a link to a more recent picture: http://www.thelighthousepeople.com/texas/Sabine_Bank_Lighthouse.html
It is referred to as a "rusting hulk in the Gulf of Mexico".
Here's also info from the national park service site...they list it on the inventory of historic light stations, although it is only "determined eligible" on the national register status. http://www.cr.nps.gov/maritime/light/sabinebk.htm
Here's some more info on it from the Lighthouse Digest site: http://www.lhdigest.com/database/uniquelighthouse.cfm?value=281

Here's a link to the Texas Historical Commission. http://www.thc.state.tx.us/
Maybe if enough of us take the time to write a letter to them, they will make an effort to save their lighthouse.

Dear Ms. Scroope,

Thank you so much for letting us know about this and sending the informative links. Although our organization does not have the staff to pursue this matter, I will forward your email on to the Texas State Historical Commission and the county historical commissioner. The preservation of historical buildings is their special area of interest.

Thanks again,
Linda

Hello Kristin. We were negotiating with the Coast Guard this spring to salvage as much as possible of the 1906 portion of the lighthouse. Actually, our first position was to question why they needed to destroy it at all, since it appears their proposed new optics could be incorporated into the lantern room. They refused that, so we talked about salvaging the lantern room since they were going to cut the tower into pieces anyway. We tentatively agreed on exploring that possibility, then they backed out entirely. Since the lighthouse is 15 miles offshore and therefore not truly in Louisiana or Texas waters, the Coast Guard decided they were only including us in conversations out of courtesy, and when it became inconvenient they shut us out. I did contact all the lighthouse groups I could find, but none of them were stirred to action. We do feel this is a unique resource that should not be discarded, but have used all our power of persuasion. If you feel compelled to continue the effort, we encourage you to do so and can provide support and information if needed. Thank you for your interest.
