You do not need a passport to enter Canada. It does make things a bit easier, but it isn't needed.

You need two things- a Government issued picture ID (not your Sam's Club Card)and an original birth certificate or a copy with a raised seal.

You may not be asked for these upon entering Canada but if you are asked for them while leaving and you don't have them you could have a problem
