However, according to the article the town manager (or former town manager) stated the CG offered them the tower and they passed on it.
A June 5, 2003 Portland Press Herald article (Climb into History, Dennis Hoey) indicated that the Coast Guard made an offer to the town. In the article, Bristol Town Administrator Kris Poland said the town passed up a 1993 offer from the Coast Guard to take over management of the lighthouse, an offer the town declined because of the expense involved.
The article points out some other issues that seem to indicate otherwise, but it is interesting that the town administrator stated publicly that they passed. Could this be a case of left hand and right hand of the town are not in sync?
