The Tampa Tribune ran an article
in the Sun., 09/06/98 Florida Metro
section on Cape St. George Light.
The catchy headline was "By
George, it's standing !". Earl ran
right past it as hurricane winds,
80 mph, came ashore. The light
was built in 1852 and at 70 feet
tall, it now lists at 7 degrees. At
first the lighthouse was 552 yards
from the waters of the Gulf of
Mexico, now water laps at it
everyday.

A group of lighthouse lovers from
the panhandle of FL are trying to
save it. $$ has been raised and
hopes are high that some work can
begin before it topples over.
