Today is the USCG's 230th birthday. As one would expect, the CG actually began life as the Revenue Marinea sea going tax collector. In 1894 it became the Revenue Cutter Service until it was merged with the Life Saving Service in 1915 to become the USCG. In 1939 the Lighthouse Service was merged into the operation and that is why many of us are familiar with the CG in their role caring for lighthouses.
