The explanation I've gotten is that flash photography can damage some of the old photos and paintings inside. they find it easier to ban all cameras because people in the past have disregarded the requests to not use a flash.

I've also heard people state that the real reason is so the can sell books with photos of the interior.

It's an unusual restriction, but it's their Lighthouse and they can set the rules. The people there are very nice and otherwise very accomadating.

The gardens outside are also worth going to the Lighthouse in and of themselves. It's my wife Esther's favorite Lightouse in part because of the garden.
