CAPE ELIZABETH, WEST TOWER, ME. Slated for decommissioning in 1882 and saved by protesting mariners and an influential Maine congressman, the West Tower was finally discontinued, its lantern and optic removed, and abandoned in 1924, when all coastal twin lighthouses were reduced to a single beacon.
