Pretty Lighthouses

Were daymarks just to make a lighthouse pretty?
To make an attractive photograph,
Or lure the artist to paint and craft?
Perhaps the striking paint designs
Had a greater purpose in mind,
Think of the mariner out at sea
Who knew he was safe and where he should be
Knowing the lighthouse was always on duty.
