NEWPORT HARBOR (GOAT ISLAND) LIGHTHOUSE, RI was originally located on the south end of Goat Island. Construction of this 20'-tall stone tower fitted with a multi-lamp/reflector optic showing a fixed white light was completed in late 1823 and its light established on January 1, 1824. The location confused mariners and many vessels ended up on the rocks at the northern tip of the island. In 1837 it was decided to move the aid to the north end. The breakwater and new light station were completed in 1838. The original 1823 tower was moved to Prudence Island in 1851.
