POND ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE, ME (Kennebec River). The first of the Kennebec River beacons mariners pass bound for Bath, ME. The first tower, a white conical shape, was built in 1821. In 1855 the lighthouse was completely rebuilt as a cylindrical brick tower in the Federal Design architectural style. The 20' tall lighthouse’s original optic was a whale oil-fed lamp and a 5th-order Fresnel lens.
