Hawaii's very first light station other than traditional signal fires was a 9-foot-tall structure on the Lahaina waterfront erected in 1840 at the behest of King Kamehameha III. Several bigger and sturdier incarnations later the Lahaina Light now stands 55 feet tall and as of Feb. 2009 boasts solar power — the first major light in the islands to do so.
