Cat Island is a barrier island off the Gulf Coast of the United States. The island is named for raccoons which early explorers mistook for cats.
The 1831 masonry tower, built under Winslow Lewis, supposedly had no foundation. In 1868 this was replaced with a cottaqe style screwpile. Like many others in the area, changing channels meant the light was abandoned and finally burnt down in 1961.
