Grace, working on the assumption that you spend the night before in the Norfolk/Portsmouth area, you can hit Currituck, Bodie, and Hatteras and get back to the Norfolk area in the same day. I once left out at 7:00 AM and hit Edenton, NC (Roanoke River) Plymouth, NC (Roanoke River replica) Manteo, NC (Roanoke Marshes replica) Bodie Island and Currituck, and still got back to Norfolk in time for supper.
