I am just livid. One of the local collectible shops is having a Bill Younger signing this weekend. I called weeks ago and asked them to hold a East Quoddy Holiday piece for me. I hadn't heard anything so I called yesterday. No one had any knowledge of any East Quoddy Christmas, Holiday or any other piece. Finally after ten hours go by, I get a call from a sales person and she said the East Quoddy is a redemption piece only and it cannot be sold to anyone unless they submitted the certificate months ago. How absurd is that? There was a redemption certificate, but that doesn't mean the piece is not available to be purchased by others. It's not a membership only piece. And then when I asked about the Panama set, she had no idea what I was talking about and suggested I get the information correct. Well, after this signing this weekend, I will not shop there again. I have bought at least eight pieces from them and if this is how they treat customers, forget it. Besides, I think they are the ones who should get the correct information.

Joanne, It sounds like you talked to a person who was unfamiliar with Harbour Lights, If you didn't talk to the store manager yet, I think you should ! often times not many people in the store are knowledgeable about them. If you get the same response from the manager- suggest that he/she contact Harbour Lights for correct information [This message has been edited by Mark Wagner (edited 11-09-99).]

Thanks Mark, that's a good idea. I knew there would be a voice of reason out there to counteract my temper.

Joanne, if you do not find an East Quoddy, my dealer has about 10 extra and I have sent the information to R@R so that you may contact Rick. Jim Johnson

Thanks to all for their help and suggestions.
I did get it resolved. The manager "agreed" to let me have one of four pieces that were not claimed by the redemption form. Apparently, they were under the impression that all redemption pieces had to be claimed, and picked up before they could sell the rest of the shipment. In any event, after telling them I could buy East Quoddy in just about 10 other local stores, they agreed to let me have one. So, the good Lord willing, I'll be meeting Bill on Saturday with an East Quoddy in my hands.

Maybe I'm a little slow tonight but why does HL require a redemption certificate on their Christmas pieces when you can just go in and buy it off the shelf? I think we discussed this before and found that some collectors found lower numbered pieces on dealer's shelves than the pieces they purchased via the redemption certificates. Is there a set amount of Christmas pieces or will they keep making at least one for each certificate and then more for dealer's stock? Bob

I believe the term for the East Quoddy was "Reservation Certificiate". Calling HL or turning the form over to a dealer enabled them to get the East Quoddy for you. Once the reservations were accounted for, the balance of the 10,000 pieces were allocated.
The "Redemption Certificates" are used to 'redeem' for a Society piece.

I started to get nervous because I hadn't reserved one, but my dealer said they ordered extra to cover what they estimated their customer base to be.

East Quoddy
On page 5 of the Vol.6, No.3 Harbour Lights Lighthouse Legacy it states, "This handsome sculpture measures 7 X 7 and will be limited to just 10,000 hand-numbered pieces." You should make note of the words ‘limited to 10,000’, which doesn’t mean there will be 10,000. The following sentence states, " Remember…East Quoddy will only be available during 1999." That means if less than 10,000 are ordered before January 1st, which is what the edition size will be.
1995…Big Bay Point…..5,000 1996…Colchester Reef...8,200 1997…White Shoal……8,000 1998…Old Field Point.10,000
I was given an estimate of 4,500 pieces that were reserved by certificate from Harbour Lights this year. That says to me that dealers would need to order an additional 5,500 pieces before the end of the year. Some of the dealers have already ordered extras; it will be interesting to see just what the final count is on the 1999 Christmas Lighthouse East Quoddy.

I just picked up my East Quoddy piece today. It is #7333. So, we know there are at least that many so far!

Quoting a reliable source, "All 10,000 have been made and will be completely shipped by next week."

I would think that East Quoddy will sell out the 10000. It's a real "looker." Bob

Bob a dealer told me that the redemption certificate for East Quoddy was for to gurantee the collector that they would get the piece and also gave them an idea of how many to order. But you are right I saw lower numbers on dealers shelves then what I got with the certificate. I got #2884 with the certificate and could have gotten a number in the low 200s at another dealer I think next year I am going to chance it without a certificate Hal

Hal, next year take the redemption certificate for East Quoddy to the dealer with the low #200. The auto-ship numbers still apply with the dealers on the Christmas lighthouse. I sent my dealer my certificate and got #93, which is my regular number that I get on all my lighthouses. Since the dealers get their regular auto-ship numbers and if you want a low number on a Christmas lighthouse find a dealer that gets low numbers and submit your certificate to them.
Society lighthouse numbers are a different story, they are not auto-shipped.

Ever wonder how it is that HL can ship 10,000 Christmas pieces in 3-4 months (98 and probably 99) but another piece that is stunning may take a couple years to retire?

Well the Christmas pieces have a unique charisma, IMHO. They follow a line that goes back to 1995 and Big Bay Point, which has appreciated well. We're so used to seeing HLs without snow, that when we see one with snow, it has a special appeal.
Looking at all the Christmas issues, 4 out of 5 have been very popular - the only exception seems to be Colchester Reef. Still it's a nice piece, but not the WOW! we've come to expect.
Hard to believe, but some people only collect the Christmas issues.
No doubt Harbour Lights puts their best sculptors on the annual Christmas project.
