I must say, I sit here tonight watching the Weather Channel, a nervous wreck... Not because of my own proximity to Hurricane Dennis (i'm about 90 miles from the coast, so we'll be OK), but I fret worrying about Sand Island Lighthouse. Now that the course has shifted again to the West, it's on a collision course with Sand Island, and with the damage sustained during Ivan, I don't think Sand Island can hold up to Dennis. There are many lighthouses that could be impacted by this hurricane, Sand Island, Pensacola, the LA lights, among others...

Obviously, if anyone hears anything about any of the Gulf Coast lights after it's all over, please post it here. I will have my fingers crossed not only for everyone's safety, but also for the safety of our historic beacons of the South... It'll be a long night!!! frown

I've been behind the times, and worrying about Cape St. George. However, now I realise that Sand Island is also in extreme danger. Though it may not be as apparent as Cape St. George, Sand Island is in just as much trouble. One storm could wipe either one out, causing devestation for so many lovers.

Hopefully all our lights are okay..... frown

I'd much rather be concerned for the people in the path of Dennis. May God watch over all of you. Please stay safe.

Amen to that Bob. People's lives and safety are much more important to me then a bunch of bricks and concrete.

Haven't heard any news on the lighthouses. But this is a good place to let everyone know that we are safe and sound in S.C.

Couldn't get home to batten down the hatches, but family members did that for us. And say that all is well at our house. We are working a Paper Mill job in Eastover, SC, and are in the middle of a Shut Down this week.

Have been very worried about the house and more so family members. But all is well.

Stephanie, glad to hear that you are okay. Robert and I thought about you while watching the Weather Channel yesterday and coverage of Dennis.

From CNN, St. Marks got about 10' of flood water which is now gone, but no word on the lighthouse.

Gulf Shores AL was spared much of the possible damage because Dennis came ashore to the east of that area. No word on those lighthouses either.

Only one death in the US. One too many, but it could have been worse.

St. Marks Lighthouse had a window in the lighthouse break which has caused a lot of flooding in the tower. frown Florida Lighthouse Association was suppose to climb it this Saturday, however, that part has been cancelled, however, we will be bussed in as part of the road has washed away. It's too bad as the State has been restorting it little by little. I will let yall know if I find out anything else this weekend.

Too bad about St. Marks - the CG just cleaned it up and painted a few years ago. Hopefully nothing too bad.

Dennis blew out part of one pane of glass on the lantern roomn(looks like someone took a base ball bat to it). The keepers house has no damage at all.
Crooked River said the storm did a sand blast job on their tower taking off some of the old paint (needs to be removed anyway). No report from San Bais.
Base was closed at Pensacola but report was the base got little damage, so hopefully the lighthouse is OK.

I just don't remember so many hurricanes growing up in Florida. Glad we don't visit during this season!
