I got Barking Rocks and my Society Piece yesterday and quite frankly Barking Rocks rocks. I like it but the problem I will have with it is the height of it. It won't fit in my curios so I must find a place to display it. I'm quite happy with it as a one time shot.

The Barking Rocks piece is starting to show up on eBay. I haven't checked what they brought for bids at the completed auctions, but the "Buy It Now" features have been less than retail.

It will be interesting to see what happens with this somewhat controversial piece.

 Bob

Great to hear that the latest pieces are finally arriving at HL dealers.

I hope I get an email from my local HL dealer by the weekend.

I got my Barking Rocks as well, with mixed emotions. However, I was told that David Winters little mark was the mouse. Any one find a mouse?? I saw the seahorse but still can't find the mouse.

I got my Barking Rocks to shoot images of for the website...

I like it!! It is very well done... I understand the collectors that don't want it because it isn't a real lighthouse but like Rich said, I don't have a problem with it as a one time David Winter sculpture. When I get back from Grandpa duty I will shoot some closeups, in the meantime this is a wide shot...

I totally agree Paul and Rich. It is a fun light to look at and there is no harm in one fictitious light. I have it on my want list.

I finally got a chance to see this one at my local HL dealer. It is actually a very nice piece. A bit large, but very nice. You have to see this one close up to appreciate it.

If I did add it to my collection, it would have to go on a mantle or in a separate cabinet. If I put it in one of my lighthouse curios, I'd have to space the shelves differently.

Definately has to be displayed separately.

Well Folks,

My Barking Rocks finally arrived! My dealer accidentally sent it to someone else. But everything worked out fine.

And speaking of fine, I LOVE IT. I totally agree with Rich, Daniel and Paul. It is a beautiful piece in its own right. As a metter of fact, I would have to say that it is STUNNING. It will be displayed prominently in my home.

"Different strokes for different folks..."

I'm sure the piece is well done and is a credit to its creator. I'm happy to see that some people from the CF like it and now have it as a part of their collection.

I have so many HL's, AB's, and Lenses now, the last thing I need to add is an imaginary lighthouse to my vast collection of Harbour Light products.

I'm still a believer, and I'm still stockpiling more HL's for future sales.

I don't go to see action adventure films because I sit there and pick them apart as being unrealistic.

Kind of the same feeling I had when I saw this one. True, it's done well as a David Winter Cottage goes, but my funds and space are just too limited to buy a fantasy piece like this.

I tried to keep an open mind until I saw it, but I still passed.

Different strokes for different folks I guess.

As I have said before
Once the smoke clears
More and more collectors will accept it.
However, the biggest thing that will hurt the Barking Rocks is the price tag.
I think the average collectors looks at a Harbour light in the different categories listed below. Or at least I do.

Less than $39- no thought given, will buy at impulse.
$40 to $59 - not much thought given. Will buy with not much hesitation.
$60 to $85 Some thought is given to this price range- I like it and I can afford it but I may have to give something up this week to budget.
$86 to $124 – a lot of thought is given about a HL in this price range. Will buy if really needed to complete collection or is of a lighthouse that was visited. Most likely will go on credit card.
$125 to $150- I think I need a hole in my head before I need to pay this for another Harbour Light. bash

Daniel, that's a pretty good "scale"

... it is pretty close to how I think when it comes to HLs!

DANIEL,

I like your monetary breakdown. It's probably darn close to what most of us think and do.

My only problem is that once I've gone through the analysis, I buy anyway. Stupid? Yup! But it's become an addiction. confused

By the way, if you need a hammer, I'll be more than happy to send you one. laugh

Barking Rocks is not a piece that I would normally buy. But it has kind of grown on me. So I have put it on my maybe wish list. My two main hold backs, besides it being so different, is the size and the price. So I am with some of the others who say that maybe as a one time piece, I might buy it.

Truly an imaginative work of art!

Kudos to David Winter for the creation -- and to Harbour Lights for having the guts to produce it.

Kudos also to Paul for his high quality images that capture the piece in detail.

Too bad Paul didn't have a Barking Rocks to photograph when it was announced.

Seeing the 'cantilevered' support for the Lighthouse explains it -- even if it might not be possible in 'real life'. That's the beauty of imagination; you can do things you can't do in 'real life'.

Those who have the "Red Legacy Sign" (or the blue one) will see another 'imaginary lighthouse' sculpted as a tribute to the David Winter years of the Younger family. That one was actually sculpted by Harry Hine.

Thank you for those pictures Paul. I must admit, I am in the "won't buy camp", but I do like it a little better now.

Especially since you pictured the bottom of the lighthouse from behind. I could for the life of me not immagine why that looked so very odd on the pictures I had seen so far.

Nice close up pics of Barking Rocks. A few weeks ago I was looking at it at a local HL dealer. It is well scultped.

Nice pictures Paul but I am still unhappy that this "Novelty Piece" is part of the Harbour Lights Collection. It has no place next to the replicas of real historic lighthouses and life-saving stations. I still do not own it, and don't plan to ever own it. Nice photography though Paul.

Great pictures as usual.
It may not be a real lighthouse but it sure is fun to look at.

This sculpture is a great marketing tool to expose David Winter's Collectors to the exquisite Harbour Lights line of lighthouses. I wonder if they'll be a reciprocal project in the future?

I got an opportunity Saturday to see this piece in person. It is very well done. A lot of color and detail.
However, I haven't changed my mind about buying one. I would rather continue to purchase Harbour Lights real lighthouses. And, I just can't get past the fact that this tower is just suspended in air. It's more noticeable in person. In fact that is the first thing my eye was drawn to!
Great photos, Paul!
For those that are interested in that type of thing or want to keep their collection complete, it has the Harbour Lights quality workmanship.
