Oh my, another one? I see they still have the Ft. Washington piece. Guess it didn't sell like hotcakes as was predicted? Now this is a very interesting piece/place. Just may have to get this one as I remember touring it with my Dad when I was a kid. No admission fee then, we just walked in and were given a private tour.

Pete, I couldn't either. Just go to the LH Depot home page and you'll find it. Their site gets a bit herky-jerky from time to time.

Well Ft. Wash was an HB something right. This one probably will be too. Maybe that means you don't get a history? Well it's easy to find on the web of the observatory and there was also an article in LHD some time back.

Pete,
mombo's right, their site is herky-jerky sometimes. When I first clicked the url, it took about 5 minutes to open. Now I can't even get their home page to open.

Anyway, here's the actual URL:

I just took a quick look at the Portland Observatory. It looks very nice. I'm partial to red.

Why is it called an observatory instead of a lighthouse? It certain looks exactly like a lighthouse.

I don't purchase lights outside of the regular Harbour Lights LE's, but if I happen to be in the area of the LHD and if it looks good, I might consider it.

It looks close enough to a lighthouse to me and should fit in very nicely with all the HLs. I'm hooked and it appears to very nicely detailed.

I like it. laugh But I only collect lighthouses. mad
Even if it isn't a lighthouse. Who would know? confused

It looks like a lighthouse. smile
It’s made by lighthouse people. smile
It is sold by lighthouse people. smile
It will be bought by lighthouse people. smile
It is a lighthouse and I don’t want anyone telling me different. laugh

Can I get it in my auto-shipment number like I did with the Ft Washington?

Fort Washington isn't selling fast, in my opinion, because it has a ludicrous price tag. 30 bucks, maybe...but 45 is price gouging territory.
I have seen two Forts on Ebay go for $65.00!!

But this one seems like a nice piece and a good price!!

Daniel, I'd call LHD and ask if you can reserve your auto ship number. I think they tried to do that with the Ft. Washington piece.

There was a story in the LHD on the restoration of the observatory a couple years ago but I can't seem to find it in their search. If you have the back issues you can read it.

This piece would be neat displayed with the Portland Head HL, if I could afford one!

Of course being only available from LHD the price increases by $10 to pay their shipping costs if you don't live in their neighborhood. Many other, smaller dealers don't charge shipping for HL's but the Depot continues to do this. Guess we can hope some of these extra charges are going to the ALF!

We were up in the observatory a couple years ago. The view from the top is magnificant looking out over Portland Harbor. The observatory itself was quite interesting, especially the history about it. I believe that I would have enjoyed working in there just as much as I would have enjoyed being a lighthouse keeper.

They have a web cam, but it is currently down.
Here is the link. There is a picture there that shows you the view from the top.

I'm a little curious as to what type of product flag, if any, appears on the Portland Observatory. If it has one, does it look just like the ones on the HL Lighthouses?

I think it is fair to say that the HL part number for this piece will be HB902. (Fort Washington was HB901). While it has a flag on the base similar to a HL model, it is not a HL piece. It is made by Harbour Lights, but it is a part of the Historic Buildings line. Probably done so that HL collectors would not feel they had to get one to have a complete collection. (This is the logic HL has used in the past when creating new items that were not really lighthouses.)

I just talked with a LHD representative and she said that they are trying to make people's autoship number available to them at least until the shipment reaches them from Harbour Lights... That's when they will start filling the orders..

That's the good news, now you might need to call quickly if you are trying to get your number as the shipment may reach LHD as early as tomorrow. They don't know after that whether they will be able to match the autoship numbers wanted...

I was talking to HL's about something else this morning and was told that they had ideed been shipped to LHD and should be there any moment.. BTW I do have #14 heading to Indy, should be here by the end of the week!

Lighthouse Depot left a phone message on my machine yesterday asking if I wanted the piece. I guess they are offering me the same number I have on autoship.

lol - laugh

Marblehead, Mass. Lighthouse, you will always have a very special place in our hearts. ....We've made the journey as far south as New Jersey, as far north as Canada. Over 100 lighthouses visited.... and so many more to go.

Nice piece....looks good sitting with the other lights from MAINE in my office.

Just curious, did anyone get a single digit piece? Mine came as close as you can get. Just wondering as #5 was sitting in the display case at the store on Saturday! hee hee...

I like the nice touch of the 3 flag poles..... It may not be a true lighthouse but it is close as it can be without being the real thing! Get your today!!

And on a side note, "On the Border" (Mexican Restaurant) in Portland was excellent!! tasty fajiatas......

wink

Thanks for the heads-up on this piece, Larry! Mine arrived yesterday and because of the early order on my part, I got a very low two digit number! Their most recent catalog doesn't even have it in there!

Great piece of work again, Harbour Lights!
