The recent tragedy of the earthquake and tsunami in south Asia brings to mind the loss of the Scotch Cap Lighthouse in Alaska with all hands in 1946. Tsunami Research Center Report Click on the photos 'before' and 'after' to see the nearly total destruction. With the most recent events around the Indian Ocean, no doubt there are lighthouses that were affected as well. I have not been able to get any specific information on the Internet, however.

John,
Here's a link to a story that has some info on how Lighthouses fared in this Tsunami-

Thanks for 2 very interesting yet disturbing posts! What was the commercial that said "don't fool with "Mother Nature"?" Rick

I believe Rick is harking back to those old margarine commercials. I can't recall which one it was- might have been Imperial (but it wasn't- it was Chiffon). They had a woman posing as Mother Nature who was continuly fooled into thinking the margarine was butter. She was always displeased and her tagline was "It's not nice to fool Mother Nature." It was Dena Dietrich. Here's a link to more info- http://www.tvacres.com/admascots_mothernature.htm Also, just to please Dave we will now return to the subject of Lighthouses and Tsunami's. Dennis

Rick,
"Mother Nature" went right over my head.
Dennis,
Thanks for the clarification.
Dave,
Didn't mean to get off the track.
