Sue - When are we going to find out what lighthouse is your HL choice? Will it be announced in June? I'm guessing that there is going to be a boat in the piece with the name Mombo? Any other folks willing to take any guesses at what we will see?

Knowing mombo's affection for the local Selkirk lighthouse, I'm gonna guess that her choice is the other local light, the Oswego West Pierhead light.

My revised guess is Rock Island or Sisters Island. I think it will be officially announced at Rosemount around June 24. Sue won't tell! A boat next to the light named Mombo would be perfect! How about a lady with a MAP and IO scratching his head?

I wouldn't rule out Braddock Point either. It's a semi-local one for Sue, and there seems to be interest in Braddock or Cleveland Harbor on the forums?
When is the Mombo signing tour, Sue?

Word in last night's chat is that Mombo's selection will be announced in the next Lighthouse Legacy newsletter which could go in the mail the end of next week. We may be able to preview it at next week's chat, depending on whether the newsletter hits the mail or not. High praise to Mombo for keeping her secret for over one year -- Despite a weekly attempt to get it out of her. Finally she'll be able to proudly say "I chose that one!" Congratulations, Sue! Sue will be Harbour Lights' guest at the Rosemont Expo where collectors will be able to touch her lighthouse for the first time! Now Jakers must endure the weekly quiz. At the same chat he announced he'd made a final selection and will convey it to Harbour Lights today. Jakers - when the going gets tough - look to Sue as your hero. You can do it too. www.harbourlights.com/chatlogs/may_17_00.htm [This message has been edited by JChidester (edited 05-18-2000).]

That's 14 months for Sue to keep her secret! Hopefully Jakers can keep his secret even after Dave H hangs him upside down, and we tempt him with lots of White Castle cheeseburgers. lol This is a great contest with everyone learning about the selector's area lighthouses while trying to guess and pry the answer. Congratulations Sue, your a worthy confidant! Good luck Stephen - you'll need it! lol

Hey Bob, Don't forget we are also going to hang Mombo over the railing in "recognition" of her not breaking during her very long year of keeping a secret. Kinda like in stereo! Dave

What a good secret keeper! And from a fellow New Yorker, if I were to venture a guess it would have to also be Braddock Point - a beautiful lighthouse especially in the winter (Christmas 2000 series?????)

If you were either at last week's chat or read the chat log (no excuses, it's conveniently linked by John above), you would have known about the "bogus" chat tonight. And if you came to the chat tonight, you would have learned something new, seen something beautiful! Ya gotta come to the chats, folks! HINT: Chat Thursday night, 5/25/00. Something beautiful appears to be an understatement! The pic we saw was GREAT. Mombo did an excellent job of picking a light for HL to make, and HL did a great job with this one! I can't wait to see it in person at Rosemont.
Congratulations, Mombo!
Dave
p.s. We also got some other up and coming news tonite. Like Art said, 'ya gotta come to the chats!

I remember when it used to be that chats were twice a month. Then it went to every week. Now it seems there are chats twice a week. I just can't keep up. I guess I'll have to drop some of my other obligations so I am able make it to chats and keep up on all of the new and insider information.
Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining. It is great that everyone is able to get together that often to chat. I just can't do it. The information will slowly trickle down to those of us not able to make the chats.

Last night's chat was not intended to reveal my choice, it just sort of turned out to be a sneak preview as John and I had just received a picture of my light that very day. It was actually just a little fun bogus chat a few of us threw together who stayed late at the regular chat the previous week. I'm sure we will return to our regular schedule from now on providing, of course, that John gets his dates right.... So tune in tonight at 10 if you're able for the official unveiling, finally!!!!

Well the cat's out of the bag now. Mombo's choice was the discussion topic for the Bogus Chat on Wednesday and the regular one on Thursday. You can read the comments of those attending by checking out the chatlogs index: www.harbourlights.com/chatlogs/ Note a lot of "WOW" comments on this one. Sue made a great pick and Harbour Lights really put a lot into this one. There are even a few evidences of Sue that show up on her piece: A rocking chair on the porch, lots of flowers (Sue's a gardner) and probably more that we'll see when it shows up in August. Sisters Island NY will retail for $75 and will have a special sticker recognizing it as Mombo's choice. Sisters Island is located in the Thousand Islands area of the St. Lawrence River. Here's a big photo to show the detail: www.HarbourLights.com/catalog/2000/images/sister/Mombos_choice.jpg Great Pick, Sue! And Great Job, Harbour Lights!

Great choice Sue, you had most everyone fooled on that one (except Bob's lucky guess!)
Is Boris in the sculpture anywhere, looking for a mouse?
You still have not told me when your signing tour begins!

Congratulations Sue, I love the stone lighthouses and I think Harbour Lights has taken your well thought out choice and turned it into one of the nicer looking editions that has come on in the last couple years. A great choice! I was hoping Patty or myself would have been the lucky one to have been picked (doesn't everyone) but I don't think my choice would have been as nice as yours. THANKS !!!

Sue,
That is one awesome light!! When the photo came up I just said (to myself!), "Oh, wow, that's really beautiful!" I especially love all the flowers - what a great touch.
Thanks for a fantastic choice!

Mombo - It is a beautiful lighthouse and the detail is great! I really like the stone/brick lighthouses also. The flowers add a nice touch and the colors look wonderful. HL did a great job. You can really be proud of your choice! WOW! Is there also a link to a picture of the real lighthouse available? [This message has been edited by Suzanne Murphy (edited 05-26-2000).]

Thank for your support of my pick. Gee Rod I don't see any cats, thank goodness! Guess I can't start signing until August which is the expected date of release. This will be a timed piece selling only until 3-31-01, I believe. Finding pictures and info on the web on this light is difficult. I guess that's why the locals call this light the "forgotten lighthouse". Not even the Coast Guard Historian's site has a picture. The only one I've found is here but it is small and not very clear. It does show the other side of the light. http://ipl.org/exhibit/light/GL/SistersIs.html There is info on the light here: http://www.cr.nps.gov/maritime/light/threesis.htm Two sources of information are: Seaway Trail Lighthouses 2nd Edition by the Seaway Trail Foundation, 800-SEAWAY-T and A Traveler's Guide to 100 Eastern Great Lakes Lighthouses by Penrose Another book that features this light and others is The Nautical Seaway Trail - Chartbook & Waterfront Guide to New York State's Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River. This is also available from the Seaway Trail folks. It's a really great book with the nautical charts, I refer to it constantly. The director of the Seaway Trail Foundation, Theresa Mitchell was very helpful in furnishing me with information which helped me make my choice. http://www.seawaytrail.com/main_frames.htm Another member of this organization referred me to the historian of the Town of Hammond where the light is located. (Even though it's on an island it has to belong somewhere)! She, Valera Bickelhaupt, was kind enough to send me a copy of a paper she had written on the light, as well as one on another nearby light, Crossover Island. I could tell she was pretty old and when she said, "Did you know we have a castle up here too? I can send you my "paper" on that one too if you'd like". What could I say? And after reading it and later finding this site, what could anyone say but THANK YOU SO MUCH! http://www.networx.on.ca/~merlebk/Jorstadt/Index.html The Thousand Island area of New York is a wonderful place to visit, so much to see and do besides the lighthouses. The Islands, naturally are the main attraction. Many famous people have had summer residences there. [This message has been edited by mombo (edited 05-26-2000).]

Mombo Nice choice. I know I wouldn’t have done so well. I will be sure and put this one on my to buy list. (Of course they all are on that list) I think every time we look at it we will think of you. Is there going to be a picture of you in every box? Is Harbour Lights going to add the story of how and why you choose this light house? Surely you get an artist proof? Don’t you.
I hope your first 2000 has blue felt and the first 3000 the special sticker.
Daniel

I'll second that - and you get Sunken Rock to boot! The whole upper west coast of NY is a beautiful area w/ lotsa neat lighthouses and early American history. From Charlotte-Genessee northward. Great spot for a reunion (though its hard to imagine a hoard of a thousand people moving through the area en masse.)

What a great choice and great looking Harbour Light! I don't know how you did it keeping a secret that big for so long.
Congratulations on Sisters Island! Enjoy yourself now that the cat is out of the bag.

Further sleuthing discovered Sisters Island done by Spoontiques: http://store1.yimg.com/I/karibagifts_1550_25757582 Looks a little different, doesn't it? But it does show one of the smaller islands that connects to the main island (on the left side).

Good thing you didn't see that before you made your choice, Sue! Three Sisters Island Light might have never been done by HL.
Is that the USS Mombo on the left?

No, Art, the USS Mombo is the red boat on the actual piece. (They must have heard I was disappointed over the color of SW Reef, so they painted the little boat bright red!) Perhaps, Lori, hope so! One thing to keep in mind. Although Jake and I won the contest, everyone has a chance to pick a light. As stated elsewhere, Harbour Lights only makes what the collectors ask for, so if you want a light made tell them. It's fine to wish for them here in the forums but you have to tell HL also. Call them, email them, just let them know what light(s) you want to see made. You never know! [This message has been edited by mombo (edited 06-02-2000).]
