I just recieved my ShipJohn Shoal, and am looking at the seagull on the roof. The left wing points straight up while the right one points out. It actually looks like it has been bent. Look at yours and advise. Other wise, like all other LEs, it is a great piece.

Got our Ship John Shoal today! What a beauty!

Our seagull wings are also both out to the sides.

Our favorite HL so far this year is this one, no, it's American Shoal, ummm, no, Oak Island. . .just can't decide, won't even try!

The seagull's left wing sticks up at a 45 degree angle on Ship John Shoal #666. The seagull on the rocks has its wings pointing straight out. Maybe they are interchangable when they are glued onto the sculpture.

Looks like the makings of a new 'variation' - seagulls switched?

This would be an assembly error much like Gray's Harbor.

In addition to the seagulls on Ship John, I was very impressed with the "weathered" look on the lighthouse railings, decks and dome by ventilator ball. That was a very nice touch!

My piece also has four gulls and the wings are extending evenly on the one on the lighthouse and one on the rocks. Two others on the rocks do not have their wings extended.

Many kudos on this piece to the HL braintrust!

I finally realized why these pieces are not showing up in Tampa at my dealer yet. The store is only a couple of months old and the shipments are going out to others first.

Lady Liberty did come in last Thursday.

Ship John Shoal has arrived in Jacksonville, I went to my dealers tonight and observed all the birds. All wings either out straight or folded in. I'll bet Sean is right on and they just have a basket of little birds that are placed on the piece. It is a beautiful piece.

I finally recieved #93 in the mail today from Florida. And I have the seagull variation that Popz Irwin has. The one on the railing has its left wing pointing up at about 80 degrees. The one on the rocks are streight out and the other two on the rocks have their wings folded in.

These sea gulls are very small. If you look at the Ship John Shoal 'Catalog page', scroll down to the detail pictures then click on each one to see an enlargement.

I've compared the seagulls on #666 and #667. The ones on 666 have their wings canted upward slightly as can be seen in John's photo. However the gull on the lighthouse was put on slightly titled so one wing sticks up at an angle and the other is level. Neither one sticks straight out from the body. The gull on the rocks is level so that even though the wings stick up slightly, they are even with each other. (As I look more closly, it appears that the left wing of the gull on the lighthouse is canted more than the right wing.)
Number 667 has both gulls with the wings sticking straight out from the body as seen in Paul's photos.

I'm planning to go to Atlanta so maybe I can get some info about this from the folks at HL. Until then I'll just wing it.

Allan, the image you called John's photo is mine as John credited at the bottom of his post and it is the very same bird on the same Ship John Shoal lighthouse ledge, it is just shot from a different angle. I have seen two other Ship John Shoals besides mine and the birds are identical to mine. One’s number was in the 600’s and the other in the 1400’s.

Ship John Shoal has arrived in Delaware. My dealer called tonight to advise the auto ship is in . Will be going tomorrow to pick it up . Now I wonder what kind of birds I will get. Maybe the Gooney bird.

I finally picked up my Ship John Shoal. Birds are cute and both of mine have wings spread straight out. I also noticed that on either side (if a circular figure could have sides) there is an imprint of the words "Ship John Shoal". Also I was wondering how did the Lighthouse Keeper get up to the lighthouse? Spring board? Airlifted in and dropped? I couldn't find a ladder or anything. Also what about a door? I think I found one but not sure.
But, anyway, I have lighthouse and card safely at home.

Harbour Lights just did the caisson light itself; they didn't do the attached dock and stairs. http://njlhs.burlco.org/shipjohn.htm

Thanks for the info Paul. Now I can sleep at night. LOL.
Seriously, why didn't HL do the whole thing? It would have been a more impressive piece.

Oh...by the way...notice I finally made it to official "WACKO" status....

Thanks SaintBrady, for the images of Ship John Shoal, I think I will visit my dealer tomorrow and bring one home with me. I didn't really plan on adding a ship John shoal to my collection. After actually seeing one at the dealers and now seeing these Great images of the seagulls, what get detail, including the "weathered look" which i too think is great! I just got to have one now!
well I got the easy part done now... talking about it... now I have to "BEG" my wife to let me have it!

I noticed on my Ship John Shoal #236 that on the first level of the keepers quarters one of the 4 window frames is red rather than white. Is this correct or an oddity ??? I could not confirm it from any of the photos as none show the particular window frame in question. WOW what a nice piece. The weathering and detail are great .

Is 'weathering' a euphemism for gull poop?
