While I'm hoping this is in error, it was posted on the Sand Island message board that the tower has collapsed into the Gulf of Mexico..
mad http://www.sandislandlighthouse.com/bbs/messages/281.html

Can anyone confirm (or hopefully deny) this? I've searched the online news sources and haven't found anything, but Alabama certainly hasn't been known for it's support of our 3 lighthouses, so I wouldn't anticipate any news sources digging it up....

This lighthouse has been on the Doomsday list for some time now, and was supposedly being taken under new ownership with possible preservation plans in the work, but nothing had been seen yet... It seems as though it may not matter now.

Any/all information would be greatly appreciated. If all else fails, I may have to take a road trip to see for myself, but if anyone has any knowledge, please pass it on.

That is sad news, Christi. It is too bad the person who made the post did not have a place to post pictures he may have taken. It may be a bit before any follow up news comes out.

FWIW, I sent an email to the address shown for the person who made the post and it came back as not a good address. I was asking if he had some pictures to share.

You can use this link to search for current news stories about lighthouses. John had posted this link a little while back and it is pretty nice. I did notice that St. George Reef is going to be re-lit this weekend (and we helped this light financially last year!).

There is a later post on the site that states that the Lighthouse has not fallen down and that it was posted in error by a mean person.

Also, Dave I don't seem to be able to place that Lighthouse- St. Grourge Reef.

Where's it located again?

St. George Reef, CA light was the recipient of Wacko 2001 Pin funds.

I guess I should have remembered to put the smiley face- of course I knew it was St George's Reef in Crescent City, CA.

I've got all 3 of the Wacko Pins- in duplicate at least.

I was just yanking Dave's chain.

And you, the king of spelling......

oh how cruel can you be .......

From reading several of the messages on the Sand Island message board I am gathering that all is not well in their neighborhood. Seems to be some amount of dis-satisfaction in the ranks. The bozo posting the news has, however, hit some new lows in the sleeze department. Would explain why he had a bogus email account listed. Glad to hear it is still vertical.

He might be a bozo, but kudos for getting the lighthouse some much needed attention.
BTW. It wasn`t me and I have no connection to who did it.

Thank you all for your replies.. I am glad to say that Sand Island is indeed still vertical. I'm not sure what's going on, on the message board, but there has been much discord as of late, and many "growing pains" within the preservation society.. Hopefully they'll get it all together and work in peace to save Sand Island. There was a great story in the Mobile newspaper yesterday concerning the effort to save not only Sand Island, but to restore the other 2 Alabama Lighthouses also.. Maybe it will happen!!

Thanks again for the information!

Dave,

I figured it was OK to do it because I'm one who does the same thing all the time.

I have to definitely proofread my posts better or compose them where I have a spellchecker and copy and paste them.

I was out to see Sand Island on Friday with members of the North Georgia Beacon Brigade and it was still standing straight and tall. Weather was great and got lots of great pictures.

Very good, Rich. Now go prepare a trip report and post it along with pictures in the Map Room!

That must be "the solution" hinted at in postings on their message board. I would hope that if it all comes to pass that the "be open to the public in 2 years" rule is not enforced. Seems this would have to be an awfully agressive time line for a project of that magnitude and located as it is.
