I got to thinking how much lighthouses have influenced my travel plans over the past 10 years. I have been to places in the US that I probably would have never visited if it weren't for the love of "lighthousing".

This made me stop to ask the question..."How many states have you visited"? I have been in 45 states...missing North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, and Vermont.

I've NOT been to Idaho or Alaska yet. All others, I've at least set foot in.

About 30 states. I traveled with my husband when he was driving semi over the road. Unforunately-I didn't get to see lighthouses. When we went to New Jersey-we spent the night across the river from the Empire State building. I wanted him to take me to see the Statue of Liberty...I of course got the lecture"this is not a car that you can just take anywhere" speech!!!

I've been to 35 states so far. I've missed only 5 states with LH's though- Alaska, Louisiana, Missisppi, Missouri and Texas. I've been to North Carolina but not to any of the Lighthouses there.

I'm hoping to add at least one more state next year- Alaska and to get to those lighthouses of North Carolina as well.

I'm missing much of the central part of the US and part of the Southwest.

Lori,

You are missing something by not having gone to Vermont- watching Ben & Jerry's ice cream being made on a hot Summer day.

That and the rest of the beautiful state of Vermont. Can't speak on the others as I've not been to any of them either.

Let's see...I've been to New Jersey (obviously), New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, and Michigan. So that's 20.

Nebraska is not anything to get excited about. Unless you like flatness and cows. Kansas was actually less flat and prettier to me.

Still quite a few to go, though I knocked off a bunch with the CO trip. As for capitols, I've only ever really "been" to Atlanta. Spent some time in some like Denver (dropping my mom off last month), stayed overnight in some like Annapolis and Columbus (and maybe Dover on the way to the OBX one time)...and passed through a few. A lot of them aren't that exciting.

Some wierd gaps...especially SC. Guess that's because every time I've been to GA, I've flown.

Guess I have to get to northern New England, too.

Here's what mine looks like. I've missed most of the "Heartland" of America.

I managed to add a few countries last month, though.

With a husband in the Navy, we have lived around the edges, and traveled across the middle to get to the other edge. So we've lived in Mass., RI, PA, MD, VA, FL, Louisiana and California.

And I count driving through as having been there. Especially a state like Kansas or Oklahoma or TX which take a whole day. Of course we now have a daughter in TX so we've been there to visit her.

I saw and took pictures of some lighthouses in the days before digital when I wasn't specifically interested in lighthouses. I've got

Point Pinos in Pacific Grove (California)in 1965

And Plum Beach taken from the bridge (RI) c 1972

And this is my Dad's picture of Gay Head, Mass from back in the 40s.

Just a head's up to all Lighthouse lovers. There
are two lighthouses I know of in Nebraska. One is just an advertising gimmick but it does sit on a small pond. However the other is on Lake Minatare
near Scottsbluff, NE.

Here is a link to a picture of the Lake Minatare LH:
http://www.westnebraska.com/What/LakeMinPhoto.htm

Here is a link about the advertising one:

ALso, Since I grew up in South Dakota, there are some great sights in the state. Most are in the western half of the state: Mount Rushmore; Badlands National Park; Wind Cave National Park; Jewel Cave National Park; Custer State Park.

Here is the map of 28 states I have visited to date. It wasn't until we got home from the Providence HL Reunion that we realized we never ventured into Connecticut.

These are fun maps to look at. I went ahead and posted Turkey and Egypt to my list even though I am not going there until Sept.

I can tell I need to get to the Southern Hemisphere.

I have been in all states except Alaska and Hawaii for a minimum of at least two weeks. I even hit PR for a month, In case they ever should elect to become a state?

This was only because I travelled consistently during my last 12 years of employment teaching classes to telecommunications engineers all over the country.

If I can include airports, I had an 8 hour layover at JFK before going to Europe and a brief layover in Texas before going to Europe.

I will soon be adding Maine.
