I guess I'm kind of surprised that no one has brought up this BBC series on the Discovery channel? I guess it's been on 4 weeks already, 8 shows.

This has got to be one of the most amazing things I've ever seen on TV. I don't know how this looks on regular TV but the HDTV version is like being there! I always remarked to MaryAnn when we are standing in front of some phenominal view of nature that there was no way to capture our eyes view in an image. Well, High Definition does it!

Bob ...

Let me second your thoughts ... I've seen some ... plus caught an Oprah where she touted it for an hour ... showing clips that awed ...

The mandate was to observe, not intercede ... one viewing should be sufficient to hook you ...

Bob, I got my new 65 inch Mitsubishi HD TV just in time... I also have a DVR recorder which enables me to see the series over and over in HD.. There have been 8 so far and I believe there will be 12 episodes all together.. The first two were produced in 2006 the rest in 2007..

The photography is outstanding, while the script leaves something to be desired at times and the editing is choppy at times but the awsome quality of the photography has hardly been seen or produced before..

I would have loved to seen (heard) Charlton Heston as the narrator of the series..

BTW, Bob, I did get the big screen TV right before I went to the Superbowl, it was my first recording in HD..

We've been watching it. I have it on Tivo and am a week or so behind.

The video is amazing- some things have literally taken a year to capture- or one secend at the right time like the Great white chomping on the unlucky seal.Amazing to see the difference in that shot from real time to extreme slow motion.

We don't have HDTV yet- so we are suffering through the regular version. I'm planning on buying a HDTV when my perfectly good tv goes on the fritz.

I've watched every one of the series thus far. It's absolutely wonderful. But unfortunately, my TV is older but works perfectly. NO, it's not just black and white.

Can I take up a collection so that I can purchase a HDTV? Any assistance would be deeply appreciated.

I have been watching it off and on and didn't know it was a special. Thought they were just the regular stuff they always have.

I've heard great things about it, but never remember to watch it. Apparently, only two episodes are left, though. frown

We have an HDTV, but we have to get the (free) HD box to use it.

I'm calling the cable company tomorrow. If there's any show I want to watch in HD, this is it. Beyond that, it's pretty much counting Brian Williams' grey hairs.

Greg, there should be 4 more and they repeat them at different times.. The next two episodes are Forests and Caves..

There are smaller options for screen sizes that might make the price more reachable.
Since I've gotten mine about a year ago, I go out of my way to watch HDChannels. Returning from vacations renews the experience each time. I didn't get mine until the salesman could knock my socks off with a picture. I have a 60" Sony SXRD that is still rated as the best a year later.

It really makes watching TV an event! I still go to movies often but this competes. I'm even looking into a HD video camera.

Bob,

This is one reason I'm in no hurry to get a HDTV. You watch something in HD and then go back to regular TV and it pales in comparison. It will of course get better over time but right now it's still a concern to me.

Dennis, HD won't get much better over time, but more HD will be coming on line shortly as broadcast TV stations are being required to broadcast in Digital in 2009 to keep their licenses.. This will make the transition to HD the next step for all the stations...

The big 4 Networks are already broadcasting in HD in the evenings (prime time) and some daytime (soaps) are going HD right now.. Other speciality networks like the Discovery Channel have their regular channel and a HD channel that only transmits in HD..

Paul,

I should have chosen my words more carefully- I was referring to the fact that by 2009 all stations need to be broadcasting in HDTV- not that HDTV itself would be getting better but the access to it.

I understand about the channels that are in HDTV- I actually setup my sister with a new Samsung 42 inch HDTV and DirecTV with a HDTV Tivo box and a dvd player that for a very small price upgrades the signal almost to HDTV quality.

My main point was that while HDTV is great I would be bothered by watching something one minute in HDTV and then going to something in regular TV. I'll wait for that reason and for the reason that my TV works just fine right now - of course if my tv goes south i'll manage to deal with the other problem. laugh

So in 2009, will we be forced to get a HDTV?

My TV's work fine right now and hate to cut into the lighthouse budget to buy a new TV.

If things are not changed you will at the very least be required to get a set top box to recieve the signal.

Depending on the age of your TV you may not be able to use this option. It's always possible that when the time comes that the government will push back the date if enough people are adversely affected.

Not HD in 2009 but digital in 2009... You can still broadcast in digital and not be HD, but you must be digital to broadcast in HD.. So most stations will go digital and then gradually move towards HD because a station will be left out in the cold eventually if they don't compete with the high quality of HD..

Paul,

Am I correct in my belief that in 2009 unless the government changes things that many with older TV's will need a set top box to get the new TV signal ?

I may be mixing my type of signal up but i believe i'm correct on there being a need for a set top box for older non- digital tv's.

A digital converters of some kind will be needed as I understand it...

As cheap as new digital TV's are becoming it would be easier to just buy a new set.. If a person is on cable and they already have a box, it will just mean changing out to a different box..

I think the price of big screen TV.s are going to drop dramatically in the next couple of years also..
