Ok all you retired Coasties out there, how did you let this one slip by. I thought i had seen everything on eBay. This would have been perfect for any Wacko cruises too!

We have a bunch of Bosuns in our midst. Find a few snipes and maybe we could borrow her to do a little lighthousing during the reunion.

Well... being one of those Coastie "bosuns" I think perhaps, I will decline. I spent a combined 3 1/2 years on two of those 180' ocean going tenders. The USCGC Madrona which I was part of the decommissioning crew, then the USCGC Cowslip. They are very sea worthy, but with that round bottom, they do roll a bit. I'm reminded of the 42 degree rolls we took during hurricane Josephine. Oh, did I say they are fast? ROFL! With following seas, you may get 15 knots out of her with those diesel electric engines. Sounded like a freight train!

I was a BM1 at the time while stationed on these ships and the only redeeming quality that I can think of was the fact that the 1st class berths were located midship. Yippie!

The USCGC Cowslip in all her glory!

Tim, I also served on the Madrona, (from 76-78). I was a snipe and would love to own one of the 180's but I don't think I could sail it very much here in the desert.

Come on Mike, haven't you ever watched that cable show called "Junkyard Wars"? I am sure a past coastie snipe could find a way to make it work in the desert, but then again there were those days they couldn't make them work on the water. LOL

Tim,
A 42 degree roll is impressive, but sure isn't one I would have enjoyed. Of course, I've never been on a round bottomed boat that didn't roll, even when the water was relatively flat. We used to have a deep-vee
hulled boat and it either rocked or snapped back, but did very well in a following sea.

Mike... I guess you were on board that fast attack buoy tender when she tied up in downtown Portsmouth? I remember one evening while I was in Portsmouth in 1977, boarding her and taking a look around. Little did I know I was looking at a future duty station. I have a piece of the Madrona here at the house... an old solid brass voice tube which was on the bridge. I managed to grab it, er, obtain it (hey, Bosuns are scrounges) when we took her to the yards for the SLEP program. Ah yes, duty on a black hull. Zippie!
