$59 to fill the Land Rover from almost empty yesterday. $3.73/gallon of 93.

The greatest thing I discovered lately was in the back of my owner's manual. Apparently, I only need 90 octane fuel to run the truck properly. So I've been trying to keep it at an average of 90, by filling with midgrade or regular as needed.

Saves me quite a bit, and it "challenges" me to lock in the "good prices," especially when I get to put in 87. The only disadvantage is when it comes to days like yesterday, where I have to put a lot of 93 in to bring the balance back up.

Also been going to the Exxon, which is down the mountain from the downtown discount station I used to go to. It's a bit less convenient, but five cents cheaper, and I get "name brand" fuel, which is a bit of a comfort. I might lose some of the savings going uphill (15% grade), but the quality is a bit more guaranteed. And, the guy who always pumps the gas for me is American, and can actually understand what I'm saying, instead of asking "premioo?" five times and then almost pressing the 87 button before I stop him. (I don't even try to do "midgrade.")

Fortunately, I don't drive that much (normally a tank every two weeks), so driving the big truck is a bit more affordable.

But still...$3.73... anger

Regular-87 $3.88

Still passed on I-94 by everyone today as I'm cruising @ 63 mph. Motorists are really concerned about saving gas and getting better mileage aren't they ??

The biggest problem is not the cost of filling our vehicles with over-priced gas. That can be somewhat controlled by altering our driving habits and the type of vehicles we drive. The main problem is the effect of high gas/fuel prices on everything else we need to survive. Groceries have never been higher. Heating/cooling our homes has never been higher. I just don't know how young families with kids will ever be able to get ahead in this world. Then there are the seniors on fixed incomes. Who helps them?

The smartest thing my husband and I have done is buy a hybrid. We bought it a week ago and we have averaged 49 mpg on the first tank! It is going to lower our fuel budget tremendously. My husband commutes about 50 miles each way to work...that's the price you pay for living in the country I guess. But, I drove a Dodge Ram and it was killing me to fill it up. Last week we made the decision to trade the truck for a Toyota Prius. My husband will use that for commuting and I get his Dodge Caliber. Not a bad trade. We would have loved to buy American, but there really was no competition. No American car could match the mpg of the Prius.

Not just seniors, but all disabled people, who depend on the car to get anywhere ...

The car I drive is due for replacement and we are not going to entertain any car that does less than 50 mpg !! The current car (Toyota Corolla) does 42 and that's not enough.

I so which we could afford a hybrid! I'd love that!

Filled up this evening at 3.499. My car gets good gas mileage, but 52.00 to fillup hurts. I only live two miles from work so a tank does last a long time. Both of my sons work in Memphis, about a 120 miles round trip. They had to go where the jobs were. But the gas prices are eating up their pay checks.

Regular gas, 87 octane, jumped four more cents yesterday. The cheapo stations are up to $3.63 per gallon in my area.

Finally crossed the $4.00 bar around here. It's now up to $4.05 at many stations in the suburbs, higher in the city. I was able to find $3.99 last night. Felt like a victory, which is pretty sad!

Regular is around $3.65 here in the Toms River area of NJ.

No more full fillups for the Silverado. I will be asking for $40 at a time.

Bob M's got the right comment here. It's not just the gas for our vehicles. A few days ago one of our local news anchors comented to the weather guy that he was tired of running his heat this time of year. Heat? What is that? I turned the thermostats down some time ago regardless of the temps. Just the other day when I was in the grocery store I noticed that some prices were double what they had been not too long ago. I can't believe that's all from higher fuel costs. I think some folks are just getting greedy. Those items sure aren't going anywhere in my basket!

How true Mombo! Have you noticed that most of your basics (milk, bread, eggs) have all gone up tremendously? I have also noticed that most people I see (including me) are buying store brand to save what they can.
It's getting harder and harder to find something else to eliminate or cut back on to make ends meet!
I keep thinking of more creative ways for cheap but nutritional snacks and meals for the grandkids-I'll have all 3 for the full day once school lets out.
I had forgotten how the government helps out the oil companies until I read the paper last night. Tax breaks and subsidies so they can make billions!!!!
How about tax breaks and subsidies for the average joe?

Not to derail this everlasting discussion on gas prices (don't you wish a tank of gas lasted as long??) but here is an expaination of why bread is more expensive. I remembered a similar story in our local paper that even mentioned one of the large flour manufacturers had a letter of explaination / apology on their web site, but I don't remember who the company was. Seems like it was perhaps headquartered in CT?

The abusive price of gas, allowing the extremely rich to get even richer, is causing prices of almost everything to increase because it has to be trucked somewhere along the line. I could support nationalizing the oil companies, even knowing how much the feds would screw things up.

Many gas stations are selling premium gas over four bucks a gallon now. Regular, 87 octane, is in the $3.74 cent range. Diesel is up to $4.65 at a station up the street. I received a load of fuel oil yesterday at only $4.16 a gallon. When will it end? How the heck are the poor people going to survive this madness? Will their fixed income become nixed income?

The new car is going extremely well. I had the ECU flash tune from Germany a few weeks back. It was an amazing process to say the least. It should do 160 mph now. The car definitely performs better since the tune. Everything is optimized now. I've been averaging 24-26 mpg with the best 26.5 mpg so far. If I could keep my foot off the accelerator I could easily hit 30 mpg.

It's great to get a new sports car that's fast, stylish, and economical. Chalk it up to German engineering!

The local area cheapo stations are at $4.02 for 87 octane now. Big Oil is crushing the people of this country to fatten their wallets. Why don't the politicians do something about it? The people of America get nothing but lip service. People who are running for office are doing just that, and not paying attention to the problems in this country. If and when they get into that office, their next major concern is concentrating on getting re-elected instead of solving the real issues that face all of us each day.

People cannot afford to fuel their cars. People are loosing their jobs. The weekly pay check can no longer pay for all the essentials to survive. It's come to a point here in America that if you don't have deep pockets, you're screwed.

Most places along state highway M-50 from Jackson to Grand Rapids were $4.08 to $4.09 on Friday.

A tornado or straight line wind fired up by thunderstorms also blew down trees across the highway and closed it Friday p.m. Saturday night rain 2-5" in many places of southern MI.

I don't believe that either. The "Credit Crunch" surely does not help. And the demand on grain and other food stuffs is getting huge. What with states like China buying more and more.

The price hikes all round are a global problem I think. Here too ... $10.63 for #87 yesterday ...

And the price of bread has risen by 80% in the last 18 months ...

I think part of the gas price problem may be all of the commodity speculators and traders involved in the world markets.

Let's hope our government(us tapayer's) don't get stuck again bailing out these traders in some way when their market goes bust (like the the housing market) and have long taken their profits and jumped ship.

By the way, where's all that Iraq oil that should be helping? Let's get it pumping and into the markets!

Further, let's start getting a larger price for our food from these countries with all the oil who can't easily grow crops in the desert sand.

Cheapo stations have surpassed the $4 mark. Most are $4.03 per gallon of 87 octane. I paid $4.22 for premium for the Crossfire yesterday. Local news states we're headed for $5.00 a gallon by July 4th. I feel that's BS to go up that much in the next three weeks, but I could be wrong. If it goes that high, many people will just stop driving except for absolute necessities. This is not a deep pocket area where I live. Most people are just fighting to survive now.

Just think if the whole nation just threw their hands in the air and curtailed their driving to about 50% of what they do now. Demand would drop off so much that a price decrease would definitely come about (IMPO).

I don't think so Bob. Our wonderful oil companies would cut production by 50% to maintain the current profit margins.

The thing is, a lot of this is starting to build on speculation. Buying and selling, etc. out of fear.

But speculation usually comes in bubble form. And bubbles pop.

It's going to get to a point where the speculators realise that they aren't getting what they want out of constant trading of oil. And then the whole market is going to come crashing down. Just like the blue chips, just like housing. A lot of it is investment, and maybe even moreso than the oil companies, some traders are doing quite well on our $4/gallon petrol.

Will it go back to the $1 range? Probably never. Maybe not even the low $2s. After all, we DO have the major issue of competition in Asia for resources now.

But we could get to a point, maybe, where the seasons fluctuate around $3. That could be more bearable than what we're dealing with now.

IMHO.

Area cheapo stations (maybe I should phrase that as the least expensive stations) are selling 87 octane for $4.10 a gallon. It's the highest price here so far even though the cost per barrel of oil has deceased slightly.

Breaking news!!! The cheapo station up the road from my home just dropped their price from $4.10 a gallon to $4.06 a gallon. I was going to pour the milk out of the gallon jugs to fill them up with this low-priced gas but then I realized milk costs almost as much as gas nowadays.

If you don't like the gas prices, just wait a minute...

The station that dropped to $4.06 a gallon yesterday, is now 2 cents higher at $4.08. The same brand about two miles away is at $4.02. I can't figure that one out. If I was willing to drive to BJ's Wholesale about 10 miles away, I could get 87 octane for $3.98.

What I don't understand is around here, the same chain's price will vary by several cents, depending on what corner it sits on. In this particular case, I'm talking about WAWA, one of the cheaper chains in my area.

The neighborhood EXXON is now offering 20 cents off per gallon if you also purchase a car wash at the same time. Price of the carwash is $11.

I'm still not ready to part with my gas guzzler...just not yet.

Least expensive I've seen in Phoenix area is $3.09. It's a welcome relief.

I'm suspicious that the decline in oil prices, coming as it does before Presidential Election here, takes our eyes and minds off one of the 'insults' to our pocket books.

I think I saw $2.79 here today.

Anybody believe it will drop below $2.00 right before the elections?

I hope it does.
But if it does then the oil companys will be asking the government for a bail-out

I'm suspicious that the decline in oil prices, coming as it does before Presidential Election here,
... but the oil prices are down here too! No election here ...
We are just grateful that it is below £1 a litre for the first time in ages cool

Paid $2.89 for premium yesterday.

$2.89! I've had my truck for almost two years, and I don't remember ever paying under $3.

Now I need to plan more lighthousing...

I seen gas as low as $2.39 for regular today. Of course this is after I paid $2.59 ten minutes earlier.

Hoping gas prices keep going down.

$2.68....this is the first time EVER that I've seen it cheaper in Maryland than right across the bridge in VA, it's $2.70 over there.

I saw gas this morning at one station at $2.09! Most stations in the Cincinnati area are around $2.19! I never would have believed it would get back to these prices!

One thing that "seems" odd to me is that Bush isn't getting any credit for this. He got all the blame when it was at $4 a gallon...

He should get some credit. After all it's less than two weeks to election day. wink

Of course an argument could be made that with the economy and financial mess, not many are traveling or are out of work and don't need that much gas.

Dummer!

Yesterday I purchased gas for $2.57/gallon. Today I happened to pass the same station and the price had dropped 10 cents to $2.47 -- I was about ready to fill up the trunk.

You had better hurry and fill up as OPEC decided today to reduce production to drive the price back up..

$2.54 - $2.69 around the area here.

I fear this is going to be short lived though now that several oil areas are announcing cutbacks in production.

The lowest I've seen 87 octane in my area is $2.47. I wish these prices were around during the boating season. The last time I filled the boat up it took 173 gallons.
