Just curious as to how much everone else is paying for gasoline. Here in Charlotte it's around $1.63 per gallon for regular.
PS We just need to get those B-52's up and flying over Iraq and start droping those Daisy Cutters! GO AIR FORCE!!!

Gas here in La Porte, IN went from 155.9 to 174.9 from yesterday to today. Now this afternoon it came down to 168.9. I don't know what can be done, but I wish they would do it.

regular varies from $1.69 to $1.79. I go back to the days in the sixties when it was 10 cents a gallon due to price wars and you were given freebies by the stations.

Torch, are you buying gasoline, or gasoline "cut" with water? Maybe you didn't venture by the stations yesterday? Ours also took a 15 cent hike, but our greedy gas lords raise prices for the weekends, and the day they raise it varies from Thursday to as early as Tuesday.
David, wouldn't the use of FAE be far more effective in most ways???? What are the uses for large piles of sand other than kitty litter?

$1.79 yesterday. Of course here in Bremen they have gas wars to see how much MORE they can charge than anywhere else! A friend of mine who's father owns an Amoco bulk plant and about 12 stations told me (without his father knowing), that they raise the price every Thursday because the fact that people start receiving paychecks about then. And they mysteriously lower back on Monday morning. There should be laws !!

Digger, The grocery stores in Myrtle Beach, SC do the same thing because all the tourists usually arrive on Saturday or Sunday. The locals know to never buy food on the weekend. Oh, I have seen gas prices of $1.68 for regular in McLean, VA.

we have one gas station where I live that drops its price anywhere from a nickel to a dime a gallon on Sunday. He's going for volume business and has lines out on the street waiting to get in for most of the day. I don't see a gas station losing money (perhaps he's taking a lower profit margin), and that raises the issue of how much profit is there in a gallon of gas?

About two weeks ago, gas was $1.46.9 (87 octane), $1.59.9 (89), and $1.69.9 (93). Now the cheapest prices are $1.63.9 (87 octane), $1.73.9 (89), and $1.83.9 (93). It took about 10 days to go up 17 cents a gallon. There are also many gas stations much higher than the prices listed above. The above lists the cheapest prices in my area.
As far as profit on a gallon of gas goes, most private gas retailers make about 8 cents on a gallon, unless they are really gouging the public.

I find gas prices very interesting... There is a major road here in Southern CT (the Merritt Parkway) that has gas station rest stops every few miles. Whenever I drive it, I always find it interesting to watch the price of gas go up. The last three station locations before you reach New York are around Norwalk, Stamford, and Greenwich and you can pass all three of them in about 20 minutes.
Yet, each of the stations have a progressively higher price...you pass Norwalk and it's a little high...and then comes Stamford and it's a little higher...and then you reach Greenwich and it's still even higher. In a matter of a few miles, you can end up paying as much as $0.15-$0.20 higher for a gallon of gas.
Keep in mind that all three stations are Mobil stations and they're essentially identical (and probably owned by the same person/people). What's that old expression..."LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION"!!!
And, one last thing, in today's (02/14) USA TODAY, the headline in the Money section is Gas goes above $2 a gallon. Most of the locations that they quote are in California or around NYC. Knowing that will make it a bit easier to pay $1.70+ in this "neck of the woods".

The average I've seen in the Trenton, NJ area is $1.54 for Regular, $1.64 for Mid Grade and $1.74 for Premium.
It was about $.15 cheaper for each grade about a week ago.

Paid $1.54 per gallon here yesterday (Saturday) for regular in South Charlotte. I could probably get it a few cents cheaper just a few miles across the boarder in South Carolina. Taxes there are not as bad.

It is kind of interesting - it appears price gouging is going on all over the country. When this thread started, our gas had just jumped 18 cents a gallon or so, to $1.74. Well, next day the state attorney general was all over the news reminding people about the price gouging hot line he installed after 9/11, and guess what? Gas suddenly dropped back about 15 cents. Don't suppose the greed mongers got a little concerned, do you??

Think a gallon of gas is expensive? This makes one think, and also puts things in perspective. Diet Snapple 16 oz $1.29.....$10.32 per gallon Lipton Ice Tea 16 oz$1.19.....$9.52 per gallon Gatorade 20 oz $1.59.....$10.17 per gallon Ocean Spray 16 oz $1.25....$10.00 per gallon and this is the real kicker.... Evian water 9 oz $149....$21.19 per gallon So the next time your at the pump, be glad your car dosent run on Water,or any of the others. Just a little humor to ease the pain of your next trip to the pump.

Of course these prices are based on your buying the product in 16 oz or similar size containers.
Snapple would be much cheaper if you had a 20 gallon tank in your SUV and could pull into the Kwikie Mart and filler 'er up using your debit card right at the pump.
Now, you want to talk about expensive stuff. Try perfume at the department store or saffron in the spice aisle.

When I.O. returned from Florida I asked him what he brought me, didn't I get a souvenir of some sort? Believe it or not he brought me saffron as he said it was on sale. Since I'd never used it I wasn't impressed. I'd much rather have had a Key Lime Pie!

Paid $1.999 for unleaded regular tonight. The corner gas station has been raising prices 2 cents each day for the past week. (Like if it creeped up, no one would remember what it was the day before.)

87 octane is available from $1.63 to about $1.75 depending on where you're getting your gas around here (southeastern Massachusetts). Add 10 cents a gallon for 89 and 20 cents a gallon for premium. I saw a brief newsclip on TV showing the high gas prices at El Cajon, CA. Premium fuel was something like $3.95 a gallon. Why is it so much more out there? Bob

I live within 12 miles of the MA border (I'm in CT). It now pays to go over the border where gas is about ten cents a gallon cheaper, especially if I can wrap food shopping or supper into the deal.

CALIFORNIA IS WERE MOST OF THE POLLUTION CONTROL AND EFFICENCY LAWS COME FROM SO THEY CAUSE THEIR OWN PROBLEMS SOMETIMES. ASK THE PEOPLE WHO USED ELECTRICITY LAST YEAR WHAT THEIR REGULATIONS COST THEM. AS FAR AS WHAT WE CAN USE SAND FOR, THERE IS PLENTY OF SNOW OUT THERE USE IT INSTEAD OF SALT. IT MAY NOT MELT THE SNOW BUT IT WILL INCREASE THE TRACTION AFTER WE BOMB WE CERTIANLY CAN USE THE GLASS FORMED FROM THE EXPLOSIONS AND IT MAY GIVE THEM SOMETHING ELSE TO SELL US OTHER THAN OIL AND SAND AS FAR AS THE GAS PRICE REALLY DOESN'T MATTER TO ME THE 1976 20MPG GAS GUSSLER IS PAID FOR AND OLD ENOUGH THAT THE PROPERTY TAX IS NOW OFF THE BOOKS, THE INSURANCE COMPANY LAUGHS BECAUSE ITS NOT WORTH THE DEDUCTABLE AND ALL I HAVE IS LIABILITY AND THE INSURANCE IS SOOO CHEAP. I HAVE PUT ANTIQUE PLATES ON IT AND ONLY PAY FOR PLATES ONCE FOR LIFETIME. I HAVE ALL THE LUXURY THAT ALL THE NEW CARS HAVE EXCEPT NORTHSTAR BUT WHEN IT BLOCKS TRAFFIC THE POLICE QUICKLY BE THERE AND WILL MOVE IT FOR ME, AND IF IT EVER NEEDS TO MUCH REPAIRS JUNK IT AND SAVE THE PARTS UNDER THE HOUSE FOR ITS BRAND NEW 1976 REPLACEMENT DOES LIFE GET BETTER THAN THIS IT COULD BE IF WE COULD FIND SOMETHING THAT THE IRS IS GOOD FOR. LETS'S SAVE THAT FOR ANOTHER TIME. NOW YA'LL JUST GO ON AND HAVE FUN AND DON'T WORRY TO MUCH ABOUT IT WORRY CAUSES WRINCKLES

Yes I remember a couple years ago when gas prices were rising, California was the highest and Chicago area was high too. Last April I recall gas prices being lower in New Hampshire than in either ME or MA as we were returning to Boston from our trip to Nubble.
I.O. reports our price dropped a penny today from the past few days to $1.71.

Around here, regular is currently about 1.649. The station I go to is at 1.599, and that was after the state forced him to raise his price. I don't know how low he went, but the competition complained and the state comptroller's office stepped in. I guess it's illegal to sell gas below your cost.

Of the three vehicles we own, our new Jeep is the hardest on gas. It has the 260 horsepower V-8 and it averages 15 mpg around town, and around 18 mpg on the highway. This vehicle will probably go 10,000 miles a year.
Our Corvette is our economy car. A few modifications have been made to bring the 350 ci V-8 up to 300 hp. It has a 6-speed manual transmission and gets 20 mpg around town and about 25 mpg on the highway. This vehicle will go around 3,000 miles a year.
Our Ford F-150 pickup truck seems to be very good on gas. It is a V-6 with a 5-speed manual transmission and appears to get around 19 mpg around town. We've had it for two months and we've only put around 300 miles on it. I expect the truck to go around 2,500 miles a year.
As a three vehicle family of two, are we a big drain on gas supplies? Not really. There probably are many people reading this post that burn more gas in one vehicle in a year than I do in all three vehicles in the same amount of time.
A raise in gas prices will not stop Lorna or I from driving as we normally do.
 Bob

Makes me glad I own 1 Honda Civic and 2 Accords. Around town, I get at least 28 miles to the gallon. No more huge SUVs in this family. Regarding gas prices, I went through the southern end of South Carolina on my way to Georgia and found prices there around $1.38 per gallon. Must be nice!

Interesting trip....regular (only 85 octane at our altitude, 87 octane is the middle grade) was $1.69 in my neighborhood on Friday when I drove up to Denver. I stopped in Castle Rock about midway between the Springs and Denver and paid $1.52!! And that's on Interstate 25. Same gas, 17 cents difference, 20 miles away, and that was a common price there. As I become more cynical with age I suspect some businesses may try to take advantage of troubled times.

It all boils down to what the other station is doing. Mobil stations in my area have a certain day each week (Super Sundays, Wacky Wednesdays) when they lower the per gallon price on all grades by 8 cents. This move usually makes them even with the cheapest gas around. On those days, the cheapest gas around also goes down a penny or two to stay below Mobil. People line up at the Mobil when the price goes down. Then the cheapo gas (Cumberland Farms/Gulf) keeps their price lower until Mobil puts their price back up. What also amazes me is that there are three Cumberland Farm/Gulf Stations within three miles or so of my home. Their gas prices are all different! Usually the price varies by 2 or 3 cents a gallon. Same company, same gas, why not the same price? Bob
