Who woulda thunk that I would be estatic after filling up my car at $2.28 a gallon this morning on the way into work.. I heard on the radio at about the same time that a station in Iowa was charging $2.04.. They say it is all caused by supply and demand..

It couldn't have anything to do with the upcoming elections, could it?

Pretty sad when we are saying gas at 2.28 is a bargain! Supply and demand may well figure in to some of the pricing, but I firmly believe that the main factor is corporate greed and their knowing there isn't a thing anyone can do about it.

Why is it when the price of oil on the market goes up a dollar a barrel prices go up a quarter within hours. But, lower the price of crude and the price doesn't reflect that decrease until it shows up in the pumps months and months later.....

I agree Dave...corporate greed!! Our prices aren't as low as your state yet, but they are indeed on the way down. We get excited every time they drop the price a few more cents.
They are definitely quick to raise the price and we wait many months for it to come back down even slightly after their predictions are wrong.
About the only thing that we can control is the amount that we use. Have to have it for work and necessary errands...so you cut back on unnecessary trips. Not as many sightseeing trips, Sunday drives, and vacations with less mileage. frown

No matter what we pay we have not caught up to Europe yet. Anyone who visits from the UK or other European countries think they are getting a bargin for gas even when it's over $3.00.

Still $2.79 to $2.89 in Upstate NY Paul. We are not smiling as much as you yet but at least it's under $3.00.

JJ, maybe yours will be down to under $2.50 by the time we head to Portland and a little beyond.. Sue and I are driving out and except for the boat and bus time on Dave's trip after the Regional, we will be on the road alot.. We are going to go back to Campobello Island and East Quoddy before we head back to Indy.. Any drop in price will be nice!!

It's still in the mid 60s a barrel. We got to 3.50 last year at 60. No Gulf hurricanes yet which could change everything. I haven't seen the heating oil prices but I'm sure they're not falling.
I was going to post the drops two weeks ago but I was afraid to jinx it. 2.69 here. Down 60 cents since mid August. Higher local taxes.

I filled up last night at $2.23. I wish it would have been this low while I was traveling this summer. Oh well!

WOW $2.28??? Lowest I've seen here is $2.76.

Isn't it amazing that now that summer vacation is over the prices are dropping???

We've had it down to the $2.50s lately. Definitely the lack of hurricanes is good - for two reasons. First, it causes no actual effect on gathering and refining capability, and second, the lack of any major hurricanes gives the no chance for hype, especially media hype. The media doesn't ever help.

Huh...why, exactly, do I want to be a journalist again? confused

$2.59 in Jacksonville.
Its just following the old theory.
What goes up, must come down.
For the past year the oil companies have been coming up with excuses why they had to charge so much.
1. Hurricane damage
2. Alaskan pipeline damage
3. Price of additives went up
4. Threat of war in middle east
5. Colder than normal winter.
6. And more than I can remember

As they were holding the prices higher than they should be. Americans started buying more efficient vehicles and started to drive less. The oil companies have held the prices as long as they could and now the surplus has caught up with them.

WOW!!! $2.10...impressive. Here it's in the $2.50's range.
 Another reason for high cost that we hear alot is : the companies are switching from summer blend to winter blend and vice versa.

No matter what gas is going for, it's sure to drop some right after you fill up! frown I filled up a few days ago for $2.84 and now it's about a dime cheaper. We do have a bit of local competition between two stations who offer a nickel a gallon discount on Sundays.

Last week we filled up with fuel oil too and had to pay $2.36 so for 310 gallons the bill came to around $735. And that only gets us through mid January. Our supplier used to give a slight discount on orders over 300 gallons, now it's over 500. Our tanks only hold 550 gallons so you have to cut it pretty close to get that meager savings.

We went out looking at wood stoves yesterday. My stove is a semi-antique and not too efficient so I haven't used it much. If I replace it with a newer model and put some grates in the floor (the stove's in the basement) I should be able to save on the heating bill. At the going prices for the oil plus EL rates (which is another story entirely), the payback time for the new stove shouldn't be too long.

Gee, Sue, I think that describes many reading these threads......

I see that Randy surfaced long enough to stir the pot with his way cheaper gasoline. That may qualify him for the agitator title.....

$2.36 ... wow ... I am really looking forward to our holiday (again cool ) in California.

I don't mind that kind of price at all ...

We are currently paying 99 pence a litre ...
So that is $8.35 a gallon ... BIG difference isn't it?

Roll on Friday, when we are travelling to San Diego!!

Dave, I'm here just about everyday, just choose not to post too much any more - whole lot of that's been going on here the past few years!

But anyway, heard on the news this morning, Ohio is now the cheapest in the nation! Makes a big difference when my truck goes empty. 25 gallons is a whole lot better at $50 instead of $75!

Now Paul, I have seen you car when you are on the road for a lighthouse trip, and I realize that there is barely room for Sue, but if you could fit in a 55 gallon drum or two, you could really save on the cost of your travel to Maine.

I filled up around noon and it was actually $2.32. Not quite $30 to fill up the Honda - few weeks ago, it was right at $40! I guess we should enjoy it while we can!

It was $2.49 last weekend on the Outer Banks, and generally higher there than on the mainland
(maybe because they have a captive audience).

It was $2.16 here near my home yesterday. I'm filling up tomorrow. Hope it just keeps on coming down, esp. with the Maine/CT trip coming up.

That's down a little bit from when we were there 2 weeks ago. We filled up the Yukon XL (31 gallon tank = stock up at good prices) for $2.56 or something a gallon. Think it was at the BP in KDH?

That was an oddball price then...now, it seems like the national average is around there.

I forgot that here in Florida since we don't have state income tax, that we pay more for other taxes. The gas tax is high here (and yet no mass transit).

$2.21 just down the street from the house, but it's still $2.49-$2.59 around work.

Debbie,

You probably won't believe me, but your response is exactly what I was hoping for.

Gee, who woulda thunk it would drop another 31 cents in 10 days.......

Still $2.25.9 in Michigan City, though....

Maybe I should think about getting a Land Rover again.

So that the prices can shoot back up to $3 the next day.

Yeah, I think I'll go for the 80's BMW.

Glad to hear I helped out, Bob. Not sure right now if that's a good or bad thing! laugh By the way gas is down to $2.32 here.

Here is a cool site . It will let you check the gas prices for any zip code.

I think what we need for our lighthousing trips is a relative price chart from state to state. For example, when I was traveling to Rosemont, I could get gas in Ohio or Indiana. I never knew when to hold on until the next state to save money.

I can say that gas is always cheaper in PA and in NJ than in NY, and usually cheaper in MA than in NY

Hey, Joe, thanks for the cool link! Found one that is cheaper than the one I usually go to - although that one is a good one, too! cool

Lowest price for 87 octane in my area is $2.34. There are cheaper stations about 15 miles north of here selling 87 octane at $2.25 or so. I think the stations aren't going to go much lower as long as people are standing in line to fill up. Yet again, if one station drops to a lower price the rest will follow suit.

I know what you mean - I hold my breath each time I come back to England and need to fill-up!

87 octane is hovering around $2.08 - $2.11 around here. No sitings of under two bucks anywhere around here but alleged in other areas of Massachusetts. Probably a gas station or too looking for some free publicity.

It's down to $2.14 here. I haven't seen or heard of anything under $2.00 either.

Looks like one better not live in CA.
Everything seems more expensive there.

Anyone coming to England needs a big wallet for fuel and a big umbrella for the rain. But watch that it does not get blown away wink
