OK. Here's one for the car nuts.

1. What was the first car you actually remember riding in?

2. What was the first car you drove? (With or without a license.)

3. What was the first car you owned?

1. A 48 Hudson with the bed that made up in the trunk/back seat. I remember sleeping outside the gates of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In the middle of the night a policeman knocked on the window and told us we couldn't sleep there.

2. Must have been a '55 Ford. When we vacationed up on Higgins Lake in Michigan, I learned to drive on the fire trails and back roads when I was 12-13 years old. By the time I got my license, we had a 59 Ford Galaxy 4DR HT.

I loved the 55-57 Chevies, but my Dad was a Ford man. After WWII, he was on a waiting list to buy a Chevy. The dealer wanted extra money to 'move him up the list'. Apparently Dad swore he'd never drive a Chevy for the rest of his life -- and so far he hasn't.

3. A red & white two-tone '56 Olds 88 2DR HT my Dad bought me in 1962 - my Sophmore year at Michigan State. I think he paid $600 for it; of course that was about the time you could buy a new car for around $2,000.

1. 51 Dodge 4 door sedan that was my father's first car. Supposedly he bought it and picked us up from the hospital.

2. Oh, I'm glad I reread this! with or w/o a license. My friend's 55 Plymouth green hornet in the church parking lot after dark.

3. 57 Plymouth Belvedere convertible with a push button automatic transmission. Prime black which I painted a light blue enamel. My Dad bought it for me as HS graduation present.

Sounds like I was a Mopar guy but never had another one.

1. The first car I remember was my mother's 1972 green Gremlin!! Man, did I HATE that car!

2. My parents' 1979 sand colored Thunderbird (a big improvement over the Gremlin!).

3. 1970 baby blue Chevy Impala. What a beast. Nice and roomy, though. I bought it for $200 from my uncle's neighbor in 1984 and it survived through my junior and senior years of high school. I allowed one of my other uncles to use it while I was away at my first semester in college, and it died shortly thereafter. I did get $50 for junking it!

1. '58 Oldsmobile ???. Just remember LOTS of chrome.

2. 19-- Ford econoline pick-up. It was really cool short stub-nose, engine between driver and passenger, 3 speed on the column and FAST!!

3. 1975 Ford Pinto! You remember "The Fire Bomb" in a rear ender. Survives a 60mph head on though real good.

1.The first car I remember was a Ford Station Wagon, probably a 1955. I do remember trying to get my Father to buy an Edsel to replace it- he passed on that.

2. The first car I tried to drive was a 1961 Ford Falcon- unfortunately I couldn't figure out the gears and never left the driveway.

The first car I did drive was my Sister's 1962 Chevy Bel Air. I was 14 and was only supposed to be listening to the radio.

3. The first car I owned was a 1966 Green VW Bug with a sunroof. I got it the summer between Senior year in high School and Freshman year in College

It lasted barely into my first sophomore year- I still had not mastered shifting at first and damaged the engine nad things went downhill from there even though I learned how to shift.

1. The first car I remember was my dad's 1936 Ford. That probably was the first I road in.

2. A 1947 Ford pickup that my dad would let me drive up and down the driveway.

3. A 1962 Corvair Monza coupe. I had been stationed in Naples Italy for two years and had saved up enough money to buy it for cash. It was the only car that I was ever able to pay cash for. Had lots of fun with that one. GOing out on dates in the 47 Ford truck didn't make me too popular.

1. All I remember is a series of station wagons in my childhood. The earliest model that I actually remember is an old Chevy II Station Wagon.

2. The first car I ever drove was a 1976 Chevy Nova. After I got my license, I got the hand-me-down 1964 Pontiac Tempest (I'm the youngest of 13 kids, so it was a long line of drivers of that car). It died about a month after I started driving it.

3. The first car that was ever registered in my name was a bright yellow 1979 Mazda 626.

1. The first car I remember is my dads dark blue 1979 Impala station wagon. We traveled back and forth from Maryland to Indiana and Wisconsin during our summer vacations for years in that thing. I suppose I remember this one since my dad payed cash for it after returning from a trip to Iran and he let me hold the cash. The hazard pay was good for him back then.

2. and 3. My brand new 1993 teal Cavalier. First drove it without a license. It was my parents way of getting me to drive a car. I wanted nothing to do with driving at that point in time. It wasn't too long after that they were complaining that I was never home and always out driving. They'd really complain now with all the miles my lighthouse trips put on my car now.

1. Don't know the make but it was definitely black. Way back when cars and phones only came in one color!

2. Don't know the year on this one but I think it was a blue Plymouth station wagon.

3. Well this one I do know. It was a 1970 red Ford that used to belong to my used to be father-in-law. The starter on it pooped out during a trip to NE with the kids. Being a Sunday it forced us to stay an extra night at York Beach, ME for Monday repairs. Returning to that area last April with Linda after more than 20 years brought back fond memories of our extra day's stay. Shortly after returning I traded the car for a brand new one, a Plymouth TC3, so that was my very first new car, think it was an '81.

1) I believe the first car I would have ridden in was a '72? Ford Galaxy. A "nice" white hand me down for my parents to get around W.Lafayette during college.

2) Probably my mom's '81 Cutlass Supreme. It was originally a diesel, but in 1985 mom had an old "Rocket" 350 put in. Gave it a little better pickup.

3) The first car I owned was a '79 Trans Am. Had the big eagle on the hood, t-tops. 6.6L, Olds403 under the hood. Not the fastest car in the world, but I got clocked going extremely fast once by a friendly police officer. Fond memories. The engine died when I was finishing college, and I had to sell it cheap. I wish I hadn't.

I remember riding in my grandfather's 1939 Dodge (work car), and his 1950 Chrysler (Sunday and vacation car). Talk about safety awareness! I use to wait for him about a block away and when he would see me, he would stop the car (work car) and I would ride the rest of the way to the house standing on the running board. That would be considered driving to endanger now.

I drove numerous tractors working on a farm in New Brunswick, Canada. back in the mid 50's. I use to travel up there with my grandparents two weeks every summer. I loved helping out with cutting, raking, and bailing hay. We even did much of the work with a team of horses. (Maybe I am getting old!) The actual first car I drove (without a license) was my sister's 1956 Dodge convertible. I took it a short distance up the street and back, at age 14.

The first car I ever owned was a 1955 Chevy coupe. I bought it for $100. I then got into buying old cars, cleaning them up and reselling them a couple of times a year. I had two 55's, two 56's, four 57 Chevys, and one 58. Then I graduated into later model cars usually around three years old.

"Those were the days, my friend, we thought they would never end..."

2. 1965 Dynamic 88. Dark green in color. Lovingly called the "green whale"!

3. 1966 Chevelle SS - boy could that car move!

1. Don't recall, but my dad always owned Chevys or Olds.

2. My boyfriends Lime Green Dune Buggy (on a VW beetle base).

3. 1974 green and white Ford Pinto

I see Digger and I both survived in spite of owning a Pinto!

57 Chevy 2 door wagon. Parents bought it new, took it to France & Germany, back to the states & then to Turkey. Dad sold it to a local before we left in December 1966 - the buyer paid $2000 for it ($800 for the car, and $1200 in taxes!)

Learned to drive in my father's 68 VW Bug (the car of choice for the Washington DC commuter)

Bought a 72 Ford Pinto Runabout literally off the floor from Koon's Ford in 7 Corners VA. (Was the special "Sprint" version - red, white & blue. We called it "Sprinto"). It too went to the great junkyard in the sky courtesy of a front end collission. In spite of its tendency to blow up when rear ended, the Pinto was a great handling car and very peppy for a little car.

Guess that makes 3 of us who survived a Pinto, Suzanne.

Here are Jeff's answers to the questions
1. Mom and Dad's 51 Pontiac
2. Mom and Dad's 62 Chevy...My brother and I took it for rides around the block when they were at work. No Liscense!!!!!!
3. My first car was a 59 Ford Fairlane. I bought it from my brother when he went into the service. Mary got to ride in it once. I figured I better get a better car if I wanted to impress Mary so I went out and bought a 64 Chevy Belair 2 Door. Great back seat. Mary must have been impressed she kept me.

Mary's are as follows:
1. 50 Dodge 2door
2. 67 Ford Galaxy 2 Door. My Dad and I made a deal when he ordered this car. I got to choose the color (dark blue), black interior with bucket seats, he got to chose the motor a 289 v-8 and an automatic transmission.
3. The first car that had my name on the title was a 72 Mod Maverick from Jack Keller Ford in Grand Rapids. It had a 302 v-8, side pipes, Mickey Thompson tires and et wheels. This was a brand new car. It also had an automatic on the floor. My father almost had a heart attack when he saw what I bought. I bought it when he was gone for a long weekend.

Long time since those days.

Jeff and Mary

Was she
(1) Impressed by Jeff
(2) Impressed by the 64 BelAir
(3) Impressed with the "great back seat"

? ? ? Or, maybe this is a call for a whole new thread to vote. . .

Here's my question - are you referring to the time period, or the "great back seat"?

1. The first car I remember riding in was my parents Dodge 4 door sedan with a fluid drive transmission. I don't remember whether it was pre or post WWII. I was only about 5-6 at that time. We took a trip to Florida in it.

2. The first time I drove without a license was in 1956 at age 13. I drove my Uncle's 1950 Chevy pickup truck to the dump from his house. It was about 3 miles and cost him one clutch.

3. My first car was a 1952 Chevy 4 door sedan. I bought it in 1959 for $25.00 from the Army Surplus. It was still painted olive drab with the emblems on the doors sanded off. I painted it black using a paint brush(eat your heart out Erle Schieb)and it got 20 mile to the gallon on gas and 20 mile to the quart on oil. The local gas station use to sell me their old oil for a quarter a gallon.

The first car I remember riding in was my families late 50's Rambler with push button transmission.

The first car I drove was when I was 7 and pushed the N button on the Rambler and it rolled out into the street. But the first car I drove with the engine running was a 1965 Chevy pickup.

The first car I owned was a 1960 Mercury Comet station wagon that I bought from my girl friends neighbor for $150.

1) First car I remember riding in was a neighbor's Hudson. Not sure of the year or model, but remember that it was a green color and had a lot of wood in the interior.

The first car that I remember my parents owning was a, I think, 1957 Plymouth Savoy with big tail fins. Green with a white or cream colored roof. It was driven to Florida to visit my grandmother at Daytona Beach and driven on the beach while there. I recollect it proceded to "rust away" in rather short order with the salt water being the catalyst.

2) The first car I ever drove was a Mercedes Benz 4-door coupe, green in color. I believe it was a Model 220 something. It had a shifter on the column, electric clutch, dual carbs.

3) The first car I ever owned was one that I bought after moving from Pittsburgh, Pa. (where I grew up and went to school) to Michigan to take a job with FoMoCo. I bought a 1967 Mustang, moss green with a black vinyl top, 289 CID V-8, 4 on the floor and a 4 bbl carb. Remember driving back home to PA. quite a bit in that car, and remember making the approx. 285 mile drive in about 3-1/2 hours .... vrooooooommmmmm.

1. the first car I can remember riding in belonged to my mom. It was a big yellow Chevy, probably late 50's. I can remember that the back seat was so large that you could actually "walk around" in it. Of course, I was only 4, but it really seemed huge. Egads, we didn't even wear seatbelts!

2. The first car I ever drove was a 1976 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, which also belonged to my mom.

3. The first car that I ever owned was a 1980 Datsun 310GX. It was light blue and had 3 racing stripes on the side in dark blue, red and silver. It cost $6500. My car payments were $94 a month over 3 years. The best part about it was that I paid it off the same month that I graduated from college! My grandmother gave me a 3 foot long blue stuffed snake to keep in the back window as a "guardian". He even had a name - Nate the Snake- and had a story about him too (which is too long to repeat here). He became quite a conversation piece too. This was also the first car in my family that had a cassette player and FM radio in it (wahoo!).

First ride - a '55 Buick Special

First Drive - '63 Volkswagen

Cars owned:
'72 Ford Capri (4 cyl. when they were still made in Germany) "MaryAnn"
'74 BMW 2002 "Mitzi"
'84 Honda Accord LX hatchback "Rhonda"
'88 Honda Accord LX 4 door "Da-Do-Rhonda"
'92 BMW 325 "Heidi"
'95 BMW M3 "Schatze" (yeah baby)
'98 BMW 525 "Gretchen"
'99 Volkwsagen Passat V6 "Sasha"

All stick-shift except for Gretchen. I love to drive. Nothing quite like a lighthousing trip, a crisp Fall day, a nice curvy road, and a Bimmer. Rear-wheel drive rulz! And yes, I know the Porcupine joke. :-)

OK, here goes (I have my license now, so now I fill in most of the blanks!)

1.a 1979 blue Buick Electra Limited

2.a BIG BIG BIG 1991 GMC Sierra Pick up (w/o license or permit)
first w/ license (about 2 weeks ago) 1997 GMC Suburban (going home from the BMV)

3.None, but the Suburban is good enough for now!

As you can see, there's nothing but big vehicles at the Sostaric house. It's the Suburban or 2000 GMC Sierra (it's got the regular sized bed now, so smaller, but it's still big!) They're a far cry from the Ford Focus that I drove in Driver's Ed!

1. Dad always had station wagons, so the first was some sort of wagon - a Plymouth Valiant I believe - early 60's.

2. A '72 Monte Carlo.

3. A '65 Chevy II Nova.

Currently quite content with the '00 4Runner Limited and '96 Honda Accord EX V6.

I wanted to add, (for Robert), that the first high school cruiser a friend and I shared was a '57 Plymouth Belvedere - only a 4-door version. Had the push button shifter and totally disgusting two tone pink and white paint job. Oh - and we discovered that the antennas located at the fore end of the tail fins could be extended really far, and make us look really cool!
