Nesting in a saguaro about 10' from a residential street and up about 20' from the ground. I discovered this owl while on a night walk and used my flashlight to locate the source of the "Whooo Whooo". Another longer term resident says the pair of Long-Earred Owls raised 2 chicks last year and 3 the year before in the same nest. Incubation for this species is about 25 days with flight at about age 30-40 days. I'll keep looking out for the hatching. www.owlinstitute.org/owls/longear.html

I'm thinking about rigging up some sort of camera mount on the end of my pool brush rod so I can hold it up and shoot. But then the remote release is only about 3' long. Maybe the self-timer? Think I could talk the city into letting me stand in one of their cherry-pickers and shoot? You have any contacts in Scottsdale city government, Bob? (I also don't want to make the momma and poppa mad.)

Maybe a small trampoline to get you up into position, John. Should probably use a video cam and choose the appropriate frames. Or. Drive Suzy's Cruiser and lean an extension ladder up against it - kind make your own cherry picker. Tie the camera onto a tethered weather balloon and float it up. (actually, a docent at Point Pinos did use this idea to get some overhead shots of the light.)

A pretty steady rain all day today here in our neighborhood. I drove by the nest 4 times today and the poor old papa (or poor old mama, whichever) was still sitting there, keeping those eggs warm.

Gee John, the least you could have done was to bring the critter an umbrella, once you get that bucket truck or trampoline that is....

Here's a shot from this afternoon. Not much different from three days ago. Probably hundreds of people drive right by this spot each day.

Exactly a month since my first photo and just one egg in the nest. I attached my digital camera to the end of the pool pole and snapped this picture. With an incubation of 25 days, this egg must be overdue.

Looks like a chicken egg John. Where's Hootie, did he/she abandon the egg. I hope we didn't have some vandals switch it? Please assure me that Mom or Dad were just off getting dinner? Owl

Mom (or Dad) didn't like my 20' long pole imposing on his/her personal space and scooted out until I left. No harm no fowl!

The chick hatched a few days ago and is now just a ball of white down. The chick 'stood' up every once in a while and nudged mom. You can just see its head left and below mom's breast. I hope to get some better shots this evening when the sun is on the nest.
