OK Sean and Tim, where am I talking about. If you don't respond "Grand Haven, Michigan," you're the strangest Coasties I know of.

I now hold in my hands an invitation bearing the Coast Guard Emblem and the emblem of the City of Eureka, CA. It says, "Mayor Nancy Flemming, City of Eureka, California requests the pleasure of your company at the annual MAYOR'S COAST GUARD BALL, June 3RD, 2000 in celebration of Eureka's Congressional Designation, EUREKA-COAST GUARD CITY. Please welcome our Honored Guest Admiral James Loy, Commandant of the United States Coast Guard, Washington, DC... etc, etc., etc.

Somehow, it just doesn't sound right to me. Any thoughts out there?

Rich

I'm not a Coastie, Rich, but congressmen everywhere love to cater to their constituents. Check with your local congressman and ask him why. But, hey - free eats... :-) LOL!

Hey Rich - that Mayor Nancy Fleming - was she ever "Miss America" about 1960? I sat next to her is Psych 101 at MSU. Never got up the nerve to talk to her though.

See if she's the right one (Montegue Michigan) and if so, tell her I said Hi!

Sorry you guys. I was after the other Tim (Torchbearer) who was a retired Coastie, but any old comment is welcome. As for you John, settle down, not the same Nancy Flemming (two M's). Besides, I'll still be on my Hatteras vacation. She'll just have to entertain the Commandant without me. Hey, Eureka won't be as long a trip as Hatteras. Since you're not going to Hatteras John, wanna go to the ball? (Hope you're feeling better.)

So Would Grand Haven still be Coast Guard City, USA (they just HAVE to be! C'mon....)??? Or will it just be an official designation? I think it just ISN'T fair to the people of Grand Haven, quite frankly (long story). And does this mean that the Coast Guard Festival will be relocated? I'm getting confused..... Help...

Gee, you suppose the good mayor is up for re-election and this is her way of inviting those fine folks in the area to (a) fill her campaign coffers and/or (b) vote for her?

How about New London, Conn? Can they be runner-up?

But Sean, how do you really feel?

I'm sure it's a marketing ploy. With the loss of fishing and logging up here, tourism is all that's left. They must be hoping to attract people. Our community is close with it's Coast Guard units, so no problem there; but I'm sure other communities are as well.

All you other communities be sure to apply. Maybe you can be a Coast Guard City as well. Think I'll leave for Hatteras now.

Maybe the designation 'Coast Guard City' applies to any city that has a CG base. Kind of like 'Tree City'

Sean,

"Tree City, USA" is a ubiquitous moniker awarded to seemingly every-other city in the US by the National Arbor Day Foundation:

Hey there Rich... sorry it has taken me this long to respond, but I just got back from Texas. Eureka, CA.. Coast Guard City eh??? And a ball including the Commandant at that! Well... dust off that class A uniform, shine up those mini-medals and polish those shoes! I must admit... I'm hurt for not receiving an invitation! How about you Sean?! No matter how many times I read your post Rich, it still doesn't make sense to me. Eureka, CA - Coast Guard City?!?! But then, why not make Topeka, KS Coast Guard City? IMHO of course! I'm still trying to figure that one out!!!

Tim - Keeping the flame lit...
