Will the high price of gasoline effect the price of HL's? Gas in my area has finally gone past the $2.00 a gallon mark for 87 octane. I've seen premium, 93 octane, at $2.25 a gallon. Yet the gas stations are filled with cars not because gas is a bargain, but because they feel it will cost even more tomorrow.

The carriers who handle freight around the country must have to charge more for shipping to compensate for the extra money they pay for fuel. People aren't in business to lose money.

I think the secondary market of HL's will also take a hit because of the raise in gas prices. A "fill-up" at the pumps that use to cost $25-$30 is now costing $35-$40. Peoples' expendable cash is drying up. When the wallet gets thin, priorities must be set. The basic needs are food, clothing, and shelter, not food, clothing, shelter, and collectibles.

Will the secondary market for Harbour Lights drop down to a record low? Will some people be forced to sacrifice their fun and enjoyment just to put supper on the table? When will the downward spiral stop?

You may be right Bob, but for me I will spend a little more time at home in between lighthouse trips. I'll keep the vehicles parked, use our bikes more often and walk if necessary. But when it come to getting out to see lighthouses, but HL's and other things I like to do, I'll just have to pay the prices they're asking. Hard to believe, but I paid over $3.00 per gallon in the late 50's when I was stationed in Italy. The upside was that those small Italian cars got 60 miles to the gallon. Where did we go wrong here?????

Perhaps HL should produce an offshore oil rig to help offset the higher gasoline prices. laugh

Maybe not an offshore oil rig, but how many of you, besides me, would like to see see one of the "Texas Tower" structures like the Buzzard's Bay Tower (marked the way to the Cape Cod Canal, Buzzards Bay, and the Elizabeth Islands) or Brenton Reef Tower (Newport)? These structures are now a thing of the past in my area but they stood proudly for many years as a Lightship replacement.

I think I'll start a new thread about these type of structures under the Wish List topic.

Speaking of gas prices, gas has dropped a nickel or so since last week. Most stations are $2.04 for 87 octane with a few forward thinking stations pumping the same octane for $1.99.

Can you guess which stations have longer lines?

Most of the stations in our area have moved their prices back to the high $1.70's. I did fill the van up last week at our Sam's Club for $1.69. I think they are messing with the other nearby gas stations as they have been staying from 10 to 20 cents lower than others. Fine with me as long as they want to keep it that way.

Can you imagine that we now think gas for $1.69 is a good deal??????

Dave, those prices are a real steal compared to what we have here on the east coast.

One dealer, here in town, was selling it for $1.59 but I'd say the average (for 87 octane) is closer to $1.65.

Gas prices have been dropping a little around my neck of the woods. The lowest I've seen for 87 octane this week is $1.89. People seem excited about the drop in price because the station is always crowded.

The oil companies are still taking advantage of the motoring public for quick profit. Has anyone seen any oil stock loosing money?

Well Bob I would have to agree with you on this one. I inherated some MOBIL stock back in 94 and since then split 2/1,3/1,2/1 in the past ten years. Now ExonMobil smile

BJ's Wholesale Warehouse is selling 87 octane for $1.85 and 93 octane for $2.01 per gallon. That's about the cheapest in my area right now. I filled the boat yesterday at $2.35 a gallon. I paid $2.60 a gallon the week before. A 25 cents a gallon savings is nice when you're buying 150 gallons or so.

How's the gas prices in other areas?

I paid 1.72 at a Sam's Club in Indy, but they are always way low. Most around here have regular at 1.77 - 1.79 or so.
