Back at the beginning of 1999 there was a certain Saint who raised the idea that HL should make the Statue of Liberty as a special Y2K piece.

Boy we sure divided over that one. With many swearing they simply would NEVER buy it -- and others saying "Fine, leaves more for the rest of us who would..." etc.

So now that the SOL Millenium piece is history and the fog has cleared here in the Fog Signal Building, I wonder how many people who said they never would (buy it) actually would be willing to admit that "well, yes I do own one" now?

BTW if you have to ask what SOL or Y2K mean, you can't participate in this thread. 0 :>)

Well I never said I wouldn't buy one on the forums, but I told many of my HL friends that I would never buy one. I haven't and I still think that they are tacky.

I love the piece and have from the beginning. I even have the LLOM version sitting tight next to it. I also have a special SOL that was put out for the 200th SOL anniversary in 1986 by a company called Barrett-Colea. The SOL rules in my house.

Lady Liberty is my favorite piece, she was the last one to be packed before the big move.

Fortunately I never said that I wouldn't buy it. I have it and it's hidden behind my stuffed beaver on the mantle piece along with the Pagoda and the naked guy with the torch, I think Liberty's ex-boyfriend. I never really cared for the SOL and still don't. I'm sure all you patriotic sappy types will whine and say it's a symbol of our freedom and once again you will miss the point of the original arguement. By lighthouse standards there were many more significant lighthouses out there to be made.

Should have mentioned it was the 'best selling' Harbour Lights ever made for sale (a few Society gift pieces have actually had higher production numbers, but not by much.)

It is the ONLY Harbour Lights to have generated sales of over $1 million to the company. Five others have generated sales over $1 million at retail. But still SOL generated the most in retail sales too.

I'm not too sappy and I don't wear a flag in my lapel, but I've been to the SOL - last time in 1964 to climb and it means something to me.

I think it is the finest execution of a replica of the SOL ever done. It could have generated another field for Harbour Lights - Historic Buildings - White House, Capitol, etc.

Can't you imagine that there must be a market of at least a quarter million people who would pay $250 for a georgeous replica of the White House? Or the same for the Capitol? Nice gift for GWB to give to visiting Electric Company executives or for Senators to give in exchange for those PAC funds they get. VBG (Of course it would have to be MADE IN AMERICA.)

I do not own the piece and I'm not interested in getting one. It just does not seem like a lighthouse to me.

After reading the old thread and remembering similar comments about the Statue of Liberty, I just have go wonder why the number of negative comments as far as it being a lighthouse. There were many lighthouses that did not glow so bright or served a small number of people. And as far as looks, there are certainly a few that do not look like a lighthouse (like El Moro), but a lighthouse is a lighthouse, big or small, simple or complex design. I just see no reason to trash this one or any other one. Just my opinion.

18,000 was the production amount that was listed in this forum.
The first mention of the SOL was at the Edison in the summer of 98 but the official release of its production was at the Atlanta event in the fall of 99

Well, I was one that said I would never purchase the SOL, and technically stood by my word. While I never purchased one, I did receive one as a door prize at the Baltimore Reunion. And while I'm still not sure I'd call it a true lighthouse, it is proudly on display in my house. As John said, and I totally agree, it is probably the best representation of the SOL I have ever seen. And after being there when they reopened it in 1986, it holds a special place in my memory.

I was at Battery Park at 3pm Saturday. We were going to attempt to take the Ferry to SoL and Ellis Island but were told it was a least an hour wait to board a ferry, and there were 3 huge ferries waiting at the dock being filled. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that it is a very popular visit! So I guess they weren't to concerned about collectors ONLY! There are also lighted SoLs and LLs.
