A lighter topic for the ol FSB which, now that Winter Is Upon Us, seems to be in full swing. Goodness knows how we like lists.

Which models do you think make up the core of the HL Limited Edition line-up? Not necessarily your personal favorites. Suppose you're a Wacko-wannabe, and you've been given $2500 to spend, which 10 LE's would you buy? Gotta get 10 - can't go over or under by more than $25. :-)

Here's my list, not in any particular order:

0. New London Ledge - $150
1. St. Simons - $300
2. St. Augustine - $500
3. Burrows Island - $275
4. Big Bay Point - $250
5. Barnegat - $225
6. Thomas Point - $125
7. Cape Neddick - $225
8. SE Block - $300
9. Assateague - $150

I really really really wanted to include Sandy Hook and Montauk but came up short some cash, so I substituted the NLL & Thomas Point. Let me know if prices are off base.

Tim Why limit the choices? Why not this:

1. Coquille $2,000 (less box)
2. through 10. nine GLOWS (now you can have the Sandy Hook & Montauk)

We just keep getting back to those GLOWS!

FBOOMCLOL!!!!

...Or why not do it like a stock-picking exercise? Each person gets $2,500 in "HL Money" and can buy whatever they want using any published price list (Lighthouse Keepers, Wahlberg, etc.), no interim buying or selling or trading, then we'll see which trader has shown the most appreciation in 6 months, 12 months, etc. using published prices?

For the purpose of illustration, I will say that I am a new collector who doesn't know any better, not yet at wacko status. I bought a copy of the "Greenbook Guide" and used the listed values to guide my purchases. Assuming I tried to purchase the same ten HL's listed in Tim's post, I would fall $325 short. If I would have obtained a copy of Jim Rutherford's "The Harbour Lights Survival Guide", and used those values, I would fall $415 short.
So the lesson for today is, if you want to be a HL wacko like Tim, shop around for the best deal and stretch that money so you get more LPD- Lights Per Dollar! Values lists are great for getting an idea, but there are lower prices out there, sometimes much lower.

For my ten picks, I assumed a theme of firsts:

1. Admiralty Head- $150 First HL
2. Point Fermin- $180 First Society
3. Big Bay Point- $250 First X-Mas
4. New Point Loma- $550 First Reunion
5. Sunken Rock- $40 First Event
6. Thomas Point- $125 First Skeletal

Rounding out the list,

7. SE Block Island- $300
8. St Augustine- $500
9. Montauk- $170
10. Cape Neddick- $225

The NPL price listed my seem a little low to some, but that is what I paid a few weeks ago. (see lesson for today) It is hard to just pick ten. It is even harder to pick ten and stay under $2500.

Yes it is Todd. Its harder than it sounds at first and imo you made excellent selections - a little contemporary for my taste, but I like the 'Firsts' idea. Very savvy. Anybody else up to the task?

This is a marvelous idea JC, I wish I'd thought of it. (Kinda like Rotisserie Lighthouses.) To make it interesting, each player kicks in $50 to the pot. Allow trades among players but limited to their initial selections - each trade has an administrative cost of $5. Donate the money to the winner's favorite Lighthouse Charity in his name. I'd love to play but don't want to be the commissioner. Where do we sign up?

Peter Lynch
