The Panama Canal is hot. The average price for it on the ebay for the last half of January was $131.50. That is over twice the retail. How long has it been since a L.E. that has been available at our local dealers has doubled in value within such a short time? Maybe the Golden Years for Harbour Lights are not over but just changed players.

Bids from ebay from Jan 12th to 31st:
Harbour Lights PANAMA CANAL SET RARE LOW #490 Price:$122.50 Bid Ends: 01/12 17:24

HARBOUR LIGHTS PANAMA CANAL SET S/O RETIRED #2964 Price: $197.50 Bid Ends: 01/18 20:13

HARBOUR LIGHTS PANAMA CANAL S/O RETIRED #1457Price:$86.00 Bid Ends: 01/21 18:34

HARBOUR LIGHTS PANAMA CANAL SET RARE LOW# 605 Price: $120.00 Bid Ends: 01/29 20:49

The average price for the PANAMA is :$131.50

The retail price is $65. That makes the Panama’s value twice the retail for the last half of the month of January on the ebay.
Will Panama keep climing in value?
Was too few of them made?
If you didn't buy one all ready, Does this motivate you to buy one now?

Daniel

>>Was too few of them made?<<

Obviously not.

While a single new model does not a revival make, its nice to see a little EXCITEMENT in the market for a change. A few more 4k edition size pieces coupled with a general reduction back to 5,500 might put the 'C' back in collecting. Scarcity builds demand. All else being equal, models that hold their value over time are more desirable and will generate more interest than models that don't.

Daniel,

As long as there remain people such as we who love lighthouses and quality sculptures of them, the golden years will remain. This is an investment on a long term scale.

I wonder how many of those sellers on E-bay first bought the Panama set because they liked it...and how many buyers are buying it because they plan on keeping it in their curios...? Could it be close to NONE!

By opening up the English market with a Pharos collection, HL is opening up more collectors who will jump over the pond to obtain LEs as well. Those who are serious collectors will not stop with English variations. And the prices and demand will increase further.

I believe the golden years will be around for a while.. The Panama set has settled down for now, but the thing that encourages me the most is the smaller number in the LE editions. Also, the quality is just getting to be the best of anybody's..

I agree with Rusty. The quality keeps getting better with each release and with the lower edition numbers and a few 4000 releases thrown in will keep the interest high.

Here is an oldy that I am bringing up to the top.
Thought that it was interesting how Panama Canal had a good secondary market after it was released

It is definitely interesting to look back in our archives. It's hard to believe that was over five years ago.

Will things ever be the same again like way back then? Your guess is as good as mine. I would like to hope so.
