Good question.

Harbour Lights is facing quite a dilemma. Older pieces aren't disappearing off store shelves as fast as newer pieces are being introduced. While most of the 1995 releases are gone, there are many many pieces left from 1996 to the present. They've taken a couple steps to help move inventory faster:

1) They've lowered edition sizes drastically. Virtually all of the 10,000 editions will be forced into retirement early because they just aren't moving and would clog shelves for a long time to come. By lowering the edition sizes, pieces will fly off the shelves faster and free up space.

2) Premature retirement. All the remaining 1996 pieces were retired in December, 1999. The remaining 1997's will retire on December 31st of this year. We can presume this practice will continue, with remaining 1998's being retired in 2001.

So these two things will help...but shelves will still be overcrowded for awhile---probably a good 3-4 years. So should Harbour Lights scale back in 2001? Will they?

I think they should. I wouldn't mind seeing 10 new releases...plus Christmas piece, Society piece, and event piece (oh yeah, and Reunion piece)...for a total of 14. It would be about 9 fewer than this year.

Will they? I don't think so. I predict you'll see 20-23 pieces next year. Expect them to be low in edition sizes...and many of them to retire within the year.

Here's my prediction-

15 Limited editions
3 Special editions
4 Society Editions
2 Reunion Pieces
4 Ornaments
3 Glows
31 total

Just a revised guess.

Dennis

FWIW, a usually reliable source has already indicated that the plan for the year is the same or fewer number of releases, with lower edition sizes. Don't forget that in addition to the normal 4 ornaments, society gift, redemption piece and ornament you will have an event piece, a regional event piece, a REXA & REXM piece and a reunion mini. Plus the possibility or thumbnails at the reunion.

Let me see .... 20-23 new HLs at a rough average of $75 each equals $1245 - $1725 out of each collector's pocket. So that averages out to $1485 per collector buying all of them. Now to earn that much you would probably have to earn some where around $1856, taking taxes into consideration. I guess a reasonable and prudent person would say collecting HLs is not cheap, but it certain is enjoyable.

However many there are, it would be nice if they could be spread out more. I mainly collect Great Lakes lights, and it was costly in September and October when all the Great Lakes lights came out at once! But I'm not complaining to loud, just as long as they keep makin' em.
