Does anyone know what the current market value is for the Whaleback, NH piece? I saw one in my local store the other day (they probably recently uncovered it in the back room as it was never out on the shelf before) and was wondering if $60 is a reasonable price for it.

Also, does the color affect the value? I see in other posts that depending on where it was made and painted, the colors could be different. this one was beige.

Yes, it's a good price if you like it. It's the original retail price from 1992.

Hi Mitch, ...According to the 1998-1999 edition of the Greenbook Guide to Harbour Lights, HL 127 Whaleback was worth $95 (Malaysian) and $180 (Canadian).

The Greenbook Guide is a little out of date and it had a tendency to value things above the secondary market actual worth.

It originally sold for $60, so if you can buy it for that now you will be getting a great deal.

Whaleback is valued at $125.00 in the 2002 Collector's Mart Price Guide to LE Collectibles so I would say $60.00 is a verrrry good price.

JChidester - I did check out the Retired@Retail search function but (luckily for me) this particular retailer did not come up as having this piece. I'll let you know what retailer it is AFTER I buy the piece.

Good idea. I haven't been thinking too clearly lately between my work week and the fact that I have to cough up $1,100 by Monday's tax deadline to pay my NJ & Federal taxes (bad year). OUCH!

Will give them a call tomorrow once I have some down time.

Mitch, not to change the subject, but a hint of advice. Talk to your employer about changing your tax filling statis to a higher rate. I know this sounds stupid, as who wants to pay more taxes. But you won't be paying anymore, they will only be taking more out each payday so you will not have to pay as much or even get a refund when you file your yearly returns.

My husband and I always file 0 and none with our employers. Yes this means that they take more out of our pay each week for taxes. But each year we get a nice Big Refund. This year we got back 6,100. from Fedral and 1,500 from State. We think of it as a savings account that we don't have to remember to make deposits to, nor or we able to make withdrals from. Our employer makes the deposits from our checks so we never see it to be tempted to spend it. Ofcourse we don't get to recieve any interest on it, but it sure is nice to get that great big check back from the Goverment every year. Then you can take a vacation with it, buy lots of HL's with it. Or invest it into an IRA or some other type of investments.

No, you don't have to go to the extreams that we do by fileing 0. You could just go up one tax bracket by deleting a dependant. At any rate it sure beats having to pay at the end of the year when you don't have anything to pay with.

Now I know this isn't for everyone but it works for us!

Your's is a good idea, but you should take it one step further.

You've got the hard part down- having the money taken out of your check before you get it.

Why give the government a interest fre loan every year. Fine tune your taxes so you get back around $500 to be on the safe side and have the rest go into some type of interest bearing account at your bank, credit union etc.

You accomplish the same thing and get more bang for your buck.

Just a thought. again, not for everyone but you already do it , you might as well get rewarded for your efforts. IMHO

Normally my taxes are +/- $200 combined. I usually cut a fine line. Unfortunately for me this past year my new employer didn't take out the amount they should have (unless they were but my new pay bumped me into a higher tax bracket - ??), plus there were some other one-time issues with both my current and former employers (roll-overs, hiring perks, etc.) which compounded everything. This upcoming year the only issue I see hitting me is the normal withholding my current employer is doing so I went ahead and modified my W-4 to compensate. With any luck I should come out ahead by a couple of dollars.

Thanks for the words of advice, though. It is always nice to get a nice fat check from Uncle Sam but, like Dennis said, why give the government an interest-free loan if you don't have to.
