If you're a hard core collector - a 'wacko' in the olde sense of the word - but your collection is still missing some of the key harder to find models - this straw poll is for you. If you're not - jump in anyway. :-)
What are the Top Three Retired Pieces you'd like to acquire next or reasonably expect to acquire next if you found them available? Answer in real-world terms based on the needs in your collection and what you think you might (stretch stretch) be able to afford.

Assateague to finish off my Chessy collection to date.
Ocracoke to finish off my outer banks collection to date.
Key West just because I'm a Parrot Head and love the lighthouse.

Missing form my collection as of 10-14-99 are: Cape Hatteras, Sandy Hook, Coquille, Nauset, New London Ledge, Ponce, Key West, Hilton Head, St. Simmons, St. Augustine, and Barnegat.
The top three on my collection list right now are: Nauset, Barnegat, and New London Ledge.
Why these three? Because I need them and they won't break the bank. They are sub $300 pieces. I realize that for the other remaining pieces, I will more than likely need a minimum of $300 per piece. This will take a little more time to save for. I will however be on the lookout for any deals to be had. My buying strategy is flexable.
Getting close,
-Todd

Great thread, Tim! I'm only missing CH, Coquille, Ponce, St. A, Ocracoke, and Portland Head. Realistically I hope to get the following three for a decent price: Ocracoke, Ponce de Leon, and St. Augustine. Obtaining Coquille? I'd have to win it or find it at a yard sale. (I don't go to yard sales) Portland Head? That might be a possibility in the future. CH 1 or 2? Again, that might be a possibility on the CH 2, not the CH 1. Bob

I'm missing CH1 and Coquille, but I think I'll be missing these for a long time. I'm actually hoping to get either a Barnegat (Green Water), Minot's Ledge (Green Water), or a Bald Head (Artist Proof).

First & foremost: Nauset Beach Second: Cape Neddick Third: Tie between Assateague & Barnegat.
Nauset because I've vacationed the next town away all my life. I'll get it, just waiting for the right deal. The others are East Coast lights we've visited.

Good responses all. OK - here's the most desired thus far:
Ocracoke St Augustine West Quoddy Barnegat
Keep those votes coming in!
And with your participation in this poll you also get free market analysis! :-)
At the moment, my guesstimate of the pieces with the greatest potential for appreciation (meaning their price is gonna keep going up) that are also still in the "reasonable range" (less than $200) includes: Montauk Holland Point Arena Assateague Diamond Head
Montauk and Holland should be around >=$250 this time next year. I don't believe Barnegat will go much past its current price until Montauk averages to around $250.
Generalizing on Art's fear of losing a Pt. Arena to breakage we might speculate this could actually be holding back its appreciation.
Ocracoke is hard to find. You may hold out for a good price and you may get it. But you may also have to buy it a reasonable price if you find one.
Diamond Head is a sleeper but continues to slowly rise in value. Find one for less than $135 - snap it up.

My three would be: Cape Hatteras the First Coquille Fort Niagara
The garage sell aspect is the only way I will ever have the first two.
While in Atlanta I walked over to where other collectors were getting their HLs signed. One older, very Southern lady, had about 6 pieces to sign. One of them was an original Hatteras. She had no idea it was worth quite a lot. Bill told her to hold onto it. I'm afraid I will only be able to see ones that are owned by others. Derith

The only ones I am missing are the illustrous Coquille and original Hatteras. I could have bought a Coquille in 1996 for $1800. I thought that was crazy...little did I know where it would be today! This is for Art. I did buy a Point Arena from a secondary dealer for $105.00. It arrived with no problem.

With the money limitation I would have to say: Point Arena Diamond head New Point Loma
I envy those of you that have all but a few. Some day, if I win the lottery, or a rich relative dies. Since I don't play the lottery and have no rich relatives, Im probably not going to get a complete set any time soon. I'm trying to concentrate on the west coast. Still some limitations there.
Thanks to Derith I now have Point Arena on the way. Would put Burrows Is. Wa or OR version in its place. Thanks Derith

Having completed the trifecta above unexpectedly soon (and also to keep this thread from its impending doom), I guess I need a new "next three": (1) Cape Neddick (acquired) (2) Diamond Head (acquired) (3) Montauk Point (acquired) Save the Forum Threads! Since I was already WACKO enough to purchase a Coquille River, OR last year, completing my collection of all 5500's (original Hatteras excepted, of course), the variations have become most desirable for me:
1. Minot's Ledge (green water) 2. Barnegat (green water) 3. New London Ledge, CT (blue water)

Art, thanks for bringing this post back up. Reading thru it made me realize how my HL collection is coming along. My top three desires in October were: 1. Nauset/acquired thru marketplace in mid-November 2. Cape Neddick/same seller 3. Assategue/secondary market dealer at very reasonable price. Only Barnegat of that 10/99 list is still out there. But when I posted that list I wondered if I'd ever have any of them. Now I have three of the four, all at below market prices. So now the three heart of desire HLs: 1. Barnegat 2. Montauk Point 3. Portland Head (talk about dreaming!) Donna

Well, I'm only missing four: CH, Coquille, Portland Head, and St.Augustine. What three might I expect to eventually obtain? (in order) 1. St. Augustine (waiting for deal); Portland Head (waiting for deal); CH-2 (might make the move if the right deal comes around, CH-1 is beyond my budget); and Coquille River (would have to be the right deal, can't justify paying current prices on that one). Being late is being the guy that comes after you, and in this case that's me.
I could actually use four, and have no real preference as to which would be the top three. 1. Portland Head 2. Boston Harbor 3. Cape Neddick 4. Southeast Block Island
These would round out my colleciton of new England Lights real well as l0ng at they were had at a reasonable price. Thanks for brigning this thread up again as I missed it the first time around. talk about being late. WOW!

Well I've been in the game for a while and would only need two to compleat my LE's, good old Coquille River and Cape Hatteras. And like some one earlier said it'll have to be a realy good deal or a yard sale find to get these pieces....oh well I'll keep looking.

Still working on the Southern Belles. I guess the next ones I am looking for would be St. Simons, Ponce and Key West.

Ya fooled me Tim. I thought this was a new thread - August dates and all - wondering how it could have so many posts and I missed it before. And there were posts from lots of the old timers, thinking that your (new) thread brought out a bunch of people we have been missing late.
Then I saw the YEAR - 2000.
Still a good topic.

(Originally posted by me on 4/6/02) "Well, I'm only missing four: CH, Coquille, Portland Head, and St.Augustine. What three might I expect to eventually obtain? (in order) 1. St. Augustine (waiting for deal); Portland Head (waiting for deal); CH-2 (might make the move if the right deal comes around, CH-1 is beyond my budget); and Coquille River (would have to be the right deal, can't justify paying current prices on that one)." Just over two years ago I posted the above message. All the above listed HL's were purchased in the year 2000, except for one...Coquille River LE. Coquille is still missing from my collection and probably will be forever. As I stated in the past, I just can't justify paying that kind of money for one HL. Interesting thread, Tim! Thanks for bringing it back. Bob

My list is currently non-existent. I don't have them all but I do have the ones I want. I am still dabbling in the secondary market looking HLs for Kristin. I do miss the thrill of the pursuit. Bob

Not looking for anything in particular but if a good deal comes along on one I like I might go for it. Pretty much out of room so mostly just purchasing the new ones that appeal to me. If these come along one at a time there always seems to be a place for "just one more"!

I'm basically looking for "Green" water variations and not having to much luck as the price is what's keeping me from getting them. I am always looking for trade for them but everyone needs money just like me to keep the new releases paid for. Rich

To fill out our collection, my wife and I still need two (not counting variations, etc.)
1) Coquille
2) Original Cape Hatteras
After that, maybe we will try to find a
Split Rock, MI.

There seems to be an echo in here. I'm missing
1. Cape Hatteras Mold 1 and
2. Coquille River.
Of course I have very few variations, but fortunately for my bank account, I'm much more attracted to variations of color and lightning rods, than I am to the ultra rare mistaken states and spellings on flags.
Now to the question of affordability. At the moment, I can't see justifying $4,000 for a CH1 or $2,800 for a Coquille. So unless they magically become more available or lose a lot of their value, which I can't see happening, I'm not likely to own these pieces in the near future. -Scott

Interestingly I looked up me initial reply (almost 3 yrs ago) and found that I had reached my goal (Montauk, SE Block, and Diamond Head). My main goal now is L/E Portland Head. Rich
