I'm looking for information on the Pharo Collection and the British Isles Collection (I recently purchased the latter set and purchased the former set last year). Specifically, how many were produced of each piece and what are the issue & retirement dates? Any other information you can provide would be very helpful. I did a search and read the information the searches provided, but wasn't able to obtain answers to the questions shown here. The inventory I maintain on my collection includes that information as well as any add'l. data I've been able to find.

One of the searches pulled up a bit of a mystery on the British Isles Collection--some vague comments about HL and John Hines and lawyers. Is the background on this collection still on a "need to know" basis or can the general public be better informed than it presently is?

PHAROS

The "Pharos" line was first introduced to this forum in November 1999. The Pharos was intended for marketing outside the US - starting in England and Germany. No decision at that time was made on whether these were to be limited or not. Indications were that they would be more 'GLOW'-sized. And no decision at that time was made about offering Pharos to US Harbour Lights dealers.
Then in February of 2000 it was Announce that Harbour lights was producing the Pharos collection to be marketed in the UK. With an edition size of 8,000 and the first 2,000 was going to the US. They were going to be made smaller then what is made in the U.S. since collectors in the United Kingdom didn’t have room like those in the US. HL thought that the smaller size would make it sell better. It wasn’t long till all the orders in the US were filled.
Then Kim Andrews Announced the following in October 25, 2000
---------------------------------------------
Thank you for your patience in awaiting news of the delivery of the Pharos
Collection Lighthouses ( Trwyn Du, Bell Rock, Ballinacourty, Portland Bill
and Needles) After many long months of waiting, our shipment of new product
has finally arrived, and sadly, the entire shipment FAILED our routine
Quality Control Inspection. We are tremendously disappointed, and know you
share our frustration, and so, as a result, we have decided to table the
Pharos Collection for the time being. We apologize sincerely for the
terribly long wait, and especially for the disappointment of not being able
to satisfy pending orders after all this time. Our commitment to top
quality merchandise must continue to come before our desire to ship product,
and we greatly appreciate your understanding and support.
We will let you know if and when the Pharos Collection becomes available in
the future. We are now canceling all pending orders for these 5 items,
PC101, PC103, PC104, PC105, and PC107.
---------------------------------------------

Even though the Pharos was indefinitely halted, 400 of them were sent to the UK. Their numbers started with 2001 and the ended with 2400. Then the hunt began. The Harbour Light dealer search had 49 UK dealers with their phone numbers. And many collectors started their search.
The Pharos is an extremely well crafted Harbour light. But that wasn’t the original belief about them. In late October 2000 Kim made an other Announcement
---------------------------------------------
-...we wish to DISCOURAGE our dealers and collectors from hunting for the Pharos available in the UK. These pieces are not up to our product standards, and we are concerned that if a dealer or collector goes to great effort and expense to acquire them, they will only be disappointed as the end result....
...We find mold deterioration, warping of towers, poor paint application and colors, as well as messy fingerprints on the pieces. We made the decision that these pieces, as produced, could not be shipped to our dealers...
---------------------------------------------
Of course the collectors didn’t listen and it was not long until a few were starting to find the market. I believe the bronze lady was the first to sell a set and it went for $750. That set the price until August 2001. Then information leaked out to the forum that a dealer was found in UK that was selling them for a total of ($279) including shipping. His name was Mark and the name of the dealership was “All Things Nautical”. This was announced on the forum by pharologst and it wasn’t very long until those on the forum that wanted a Pharos set got one including yours truly. Mark was the main provider for the US and he was able to sell 200 sets of the Pharos. Mark was able to get cheap shipping ($40) that made him the best one to buy from. I doubt that much more than another 50 made it to U.S. by other UK dealers. This would make it a total of around 250 sets. This year the Pharos value has peaked to $380 on ebay and $450 on the Market Place.

The following is a list of the Pharos that the collectors on this forum has provided.
This list was put together by Shortcake.

I have a Longstone and Old Lundy from the British Isles Collection. They both have a flag with a # symbol carved on it, but no actual number was written on next to the symbol.

None of the 12 I own have serial numbers.

I've taken Shortcake's list of Pharo Collection a step further and laid it out with each sculpture's number in a column under its owner's name, i.e.,

Daniel Sandy
PC 101 Portland Bill 2170 2314
PC 102 Bishop Rock Unnumbered
PC 103 Trwyn Du 2140 2042
PC 104 Needles Point 2235 2311
PC 105 Ballinacourty Point 2216 2094
PC 106 Longstone Unnumbered
PC 107 Bell Rock 2395 2292
PC 108 Old Lundy Unnumbered
(Lundy Island)

I did this to see if others had same numbers in the hope that we could swap to get the same number for each set. The only person having a same number in my set is RESCHULTZ who has Bell Rock #2311. I have to proof the spreadsheet but if anybody wants a copy of the final printout email me with your mailing address. As you can see from this message, the tabs don't set and this message appears jumbled, so I think it's safe to assume the same thing will happen in an email.

Sandy, is the spreadsheet in M.S. Excel? If so you should be able to send the file as an attachment to an e-mail also, and Excel spreadsheets can be opened with the spreadsheet program that is built into Microsoft works (included in Windows)

I guess I didn't realize we were making a list. FWIW in addition to the Needles Point piece in the original list I have:

2048 Bell Rock
2062 Trwyn Du
2204 Ballinacourty Point
2378 Portland Bill

And I also have an Old Lundy.

I seem to recall someone, maybe Paul?, saying that there were more than 400 made of one of the Pharos pieces, maybe Portland Bill???

It is possible the Portland Bill could have a larger production since it was made in China. While the rest that had the production problems were made in Malaysia. I believe Paul had mentioned that maybe the extras Portland Bill are kept in storage somewhere waiting for the return of the Pharos.

Sue,

Shortcake's list has only one entry for you--PC 104, Needles Point, Serial #2143. Do you still have that one? I'll add the four you've listed here, as well as an unnumbered Old Lundy to my spreadsheet list.

What is printed on the bottom. Does it say Harbour Lights or Pharo Lights or what?

Yes Sandy, I still have that Needles Point piece which is just one digit off from the ones you are looking for!

Eric, the sticker on the bottom says Pharos Collection, Exclusively for Younger & Associates. The flag shows the piece number with a line under it but no edition size.

I have a little information that I can share with you about the British Isles pcs. Awhile back Harbour Lights and John Hines had some discussions about making some pcs. and seeing what kind of interest could be generated in the UK. Harbour Lights provided most of the research and John produced the molds in one of his shops. Around the same time all these plans were been carried out, the collectible markets rather dramatic down turn hit England. This same downturn made it's way over here also but quite a bit later.
These pcs. were made of a form of plaster and were and are very fragile. Also, the white boxes and packaging were not up to snuff either, therefore breakage was quite high.
As time passed, parties felt because of market conditions, this undertaking was a money losing proposition and the production was stopped.
I was told by good sources, that although detailed records are not always maintained over in good old England, the # of actual pieces produced is definitely in the hundreds.
I am not sure, but I believe only the 3 pcs. mentioned and the little light series were all that were ever produced.

Thanks for the info Kaiz. That raises a question.

Why were PC 102 Bishop Rock, PC 106 Longstone, and PC 108 Old Lundy named British Isles Collection and the five others from that group named Pharo Collection? The boxes for the 3 unnumbered pieces are white and the sticker on the box and the sculpture inside have labels that indicate the piece is considered part of a collection known as British Isles Collection. The boxes for the other 5 pieces are brown and the labels on the piece indicates it is part of a collection known as the Pharo Collection (which then leads to another question--why name it "Pharo?"). I would think the PC in the edition number is short for Pharo Collection, so the British Isles Collection for these 3 pieces makes no sense.

I really need to get out more often!! wink wink

Sandy - The PC pieces were developed by Harbour Lights for the European Market. The "British Isles Collection" pieces were developed by John Hines without the knowledge or permission of Harbour Lights.

"Pharo" translates to "Lighthouse" in several European languages.

John,

Am I correct if I translate your reponse to mean that Hines produced the 3 almost-full size unnumbered as to serial number, but numbered as to edition number (PC xxx) and named the 3 pieces with the same name he applied to the 12-piece Little Light of Mine--British Isles Collection? Am I missing something here? confused confused

Sandy, I have a note that says the number of Old Lundy (the full sized piece) is EPC 203. Don't know whether that number's shown on the box or if I just picked that info up somewhere. (The box is squireled away in a place I don't care to go right now, lol!)

My Old Lundy's label on the bottom of the sculpture and on the white box it came in reads:

British Isles Collection
Old Lundy
Lundy Island

Distributed by Harbour Lights
c2000

The flag reads:
OLD LUNDY
#______UK
c2000

Curioser and curioser

Sandy confused confused

I just squirreled the boxes from the Little Light of Mine, British Isles Collection in the attic after avoiding that nasty trek for too long. Naturally I picked the hottest day of the year!

I hope it is okay to post here since I don't want to catch anything one of the members might have. Anyway, my British Isles collection includes:

101 Portland Bill 2221
103 Trwyn Du 2192, 2204
104 Needles Point 2192, 2341
105 Ballinacourty Point 2111, 2338
107 Bell Rock 2192, 2306
Bishops Rock
Longstone

I also have the 12 set collection of the Little Lights of Mine which I won't bother listing. I have 3 of the 5 Pharos Collection with the flag number 2192. I sure would like to get the remaining 2 with the same number. Anyone have Portland Bill and/or Ballinacourty Point with the flag number 2192 that they would like to either trade or sell?

I just looked at the list posted by Shortcake above and notice that 103 Trwyn Du, 104 Needles Point, and 107 Bell Rock with the flag number 2192 belong to "wilsonj3". Since I have the 3 lighthouses with that flag number sitting in front of me, can I assume this list is an old one? I bought these some time ago, so unless I purchased these from wilsonj3, there are duplicate lighthouses with the same flag number. Could "wilsonj3" please respond to help clear this up? Thanks.

Scott

Scott - As I was reading your post I noticed the duplication of serial numbers. I figured that maybe at one time you had registered under another name. It also looks like Ballinacourty 2338 came from "wilsonj3". Chances are you bought them from "wilsonj3" to get those numbers but I don't see him listed under the directory. Oh, I also notice that you are missing the Old Lundy Piece of the British Isles Collection or did you forget to list it? Also, did you go ahead and order you Erie Land Light as both John and I explained about the ordering sequence?

Daniel - Maybe you can help. Where did you get the information that wilsonj3 had the serial number 2192 for thos three pieces?

Here are the sites were the first list of Pharos started

Shortcake started a list from the list above and with numbers that collectors emailed to her.

maybe wilsonj3 is a email and note a user name?

British Isles

The only thing that is Harbour lights about the British Isles is the name. 15 of these sets have been sent to the US through the All Things Nautical website. The past couple of months an other 4 has entered the US. The lighthouses were made for the British market at John Hines Studios in England in 2000. Harbour lights was not involved in the design or any aspect of making them. They are made of plaster instead of the cold cast porcelain that Harbour Lights uses. This makes the British Isles very prone to breakage. The British are not into collectables like the Americans and The British Isle did not sell well in the UK

The British Isles is no way in the category of Pharos collection, which was designed, and Marketed by Harbour Lights. They lack the detail such as was with the Pharos and many collectors compare the British Isles with the style of the early Harbour Lights. I feel you don’t have to have the British Isles collection to say you have all the Harbour Lights, but since it does have the Harbour Light name it would definitely make a nice complement to a HL collection.

The British Isles apparently are more rare than the Pharos but still doesn’t carry the secondary value that the Pharos has. The British Isles will need to get some recognition from more collectors before its value will go up. The fact that one was given away at the reunion will help them. Even though there doesn’t seem to be much of a demand for them, if you want one good luck in finding them.

If anyone is looking for a British Isle Set, I may be able to help. When Rock and myself got ours last November from a dealer in England, he still had one set left to sell. He may still have it and I have his phone number if your interested.

Tad confused here people. Are you talking about the 3 additional pieces to the Pharo Set or the LLOM British Isles set?

Thanks,
Sandy

Not as confusing as it seems Sandy. The Pharos is a Harbour Lights produced set of 5 lights. The British Isles was done by Hines. There are 2 sets: The set of 12 that are about the size of the LLOM and the set of 3 that are about the same size as the Pharos. The 3 in the large set are Bishop Rock, Longstone and Lundy Island(Old Lundy). They are not part of the Pharos even though some collectors put them in that group and the workmanship resembles the workmanship of the original 17. I personally like them better then the Pharos but they are more delicate although when packed correctly there should be no problem. The sets that Rock and I bought last november made it just fine and mine even took about a 10 day detour through England before making it to Florida.

Mombo--yeah, yeah, yeah. My family says the same thing all the time--YOU started this, so wipe that dumbfounded look off your face. . . .

BTW Daniel:
Quote:
One of the searches pulled up a bit of a mystery on the British Isles Collection--some vague comments about HL and John Hines and lawyers. Is the background on this collection still on a "need to know" basis or can the general public be better informed than it presently is?
Feeling well enough to add more dialogue?

The Younger family forgot to share this inside info with me. When I asked about the British Isles, Bill and Kim just said that they were very disappointed with them. They felt that Johns Hines could have done a better job with its quality. All I know is bits and pieces that I have put together over the years. Going back over the old forum material, it appears that John Hines design the British Isles and had them packaged under the name of Harbour Lights without the knowledge of Bill and Kim. I doubt that any lawyers were involved. The part on the forum that mentions about a lawyer sounds like in jest only.

That’s all that I know. Someone else will have to jump in and tell the rest of the story.
Questions I have is:

1. What came first the Pharos or the British Isles?

2. Was the British Isles started first and that gave Harbour Lights the idea to start Pharos?

3. Or Was Pharos created first and John Hines then decided to jump in and add the British Isles to it?

Good questions Daniel and thanks for the reply.

I plan to proof my listing of numbers for the Pharo Collection (mine is in alpha order to make it easier to determine if swapping with one another to obtain matched sets is doable) in the coming weeks. If you have a Pharo Collection set or part of a set and haven't already supplied your numbers, let me know what the numbers are and I'll add them to the list I'm doing.

I have Shortcake's listing that was posted here early on, the individual responses that were posted here, and the 11-page thread dated July of 2001. Again, if you have have a set or part of a set and haven't already supplied your numbers, . . .

The following list of names are/were owners of the Pharo Collection per data on a listing Shortcake compiled in August of 2001 and from postings to this topic in 2005 and from emails I've received relative to this topic. Those names with an asterisk are individuals who have stated they also own the 3 unnumbered pieces to this collection. If you haven't supplied me with that information already, please do so now so that the final listing will incorporate that information.

I have sent a number of emails to clear up discrepancies. When that information is received and entered to the spreadsheet I've compiled, I'll post that information here. As the spreadsheet won't import properly, I will ask that members send me a stamped, preaddressed envelope for use in mailing them a copy of the spreadsheet if they want one.

Scott, relative to your query about 2192, I have sent a request for numbers to "wilsonJ3, Member #741" and will advise the results.

John,

Your 7/31/2001 post indicated that number for Bell Rock was 2275. You've indicated here that the number is 2273. Research please and let me know. Randy's post indicates he has #2273 as well.

Randy,

Thanks for the update. Will post to spreadsheet.

I'm waiting on a response from one more individual, after which I will incorporate his numbers into the spreadsheet and advise when it's complete.

At this point, there are 43 members owning 52 sets.

Maybe there's a way to sort the list to see if trades would be possible so one or more people could end up with matching number sets, Sandy.

Or consecutive number sets. smile

Oh,oh, I see Randy and I both have #2273 for Bell Rock. We better go check the numbers.

My piece is packed in "Box D" of 10 "shorty wardrobe" boxes in storage. I've got to figure out how deeply buried Box D is. My packing list does say it's #2273.
