OK. Time to 'fess up. In a reply, please answer 'A' or 'B'. No explanations, no justifications, no B.S. Just 'A' or 'B'. 'All of the above' and 'none of the above are not valid choices.

Which statement most closely represents your reason for collecting Harbour Lights?

(A) I buy Harbour Lights more because I like lighthouses than because they are collectibles that can appreciate in value.

(B) I buy Harbour Lights more because they are collectibles that can appreciate in value than because I like lighthouses.

This is the sort of presentation of two mindless and poor choices that drives the creation of 3rd parties, and I think it kinda insults folks intelligence.

I like lighthouses. I liked lighthouses before I collected Harbour Lights and not because of them. I like Harbour Lights because of their aesthetics. I like Harbour Lights because they appreciate in value. Given the choice between two lines of lighthouse models with roughly equal aesthetics I will opt to collect the line that has a greater propensity for value appreciation. Call it B.S. if you like, Art.

JTimothyA - We are starting to get a little concerned . . . this is the second time in a month that we fully agree with you on a posting. You expressed our thoughts about HL's and lighthouses very well in this thread.

Sorry Art, but we can't go with A or B, it's just too limiting; and that's no B.S.

Tim,

I didn't mind the question or the choices and I don't feel insulted at the question.

I collect them because I like them. If they go up in value - great. If they don't - so what. If they go down - so what - I'm not going to sell them. You can buy a sofa for $1200 and in two years it's worth $150 but no one raises a fuss at that. A car is purchased for $15,000 and in two years it's worth $9,000. When I want to make money, I buy stocks when the price is low and sell when it's high. But please don't say that my intelligence is questioned because I simply choose to collect because I LIKE THEM.

Art,

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think what you are asking is:

A: You buy Harbour Lights for the fact that you like lighthouses. The fact that they are an investment is a bonus, but not the driving reason for your purchase.

or

B: You buy Harbour Lights for the investment. The fact that you like lighthouses is an added bonus.

So following this reasoning, unless you by Harbour Lights equally for the investment and love of lighthouses, and I am sure there are a number of you out there, you should be able to answer either A or B. I think it all comes down to the word more in either question.

But hey, it wouldn't be the first time I was off base.

-Todd

I think you're close Todd - the word 'more' is part of the problem. The 'more' word is the straw poll's finagle. Its the escape hatch.

Aside from a set of only two choices designed to rule out more sophisticated reasons, what makes the questions emotively insidious, imo, is the introduction of the additional comparison between the rationale for buying Harbour Lights and one's enjoyment of real lighthouses. If the choices had simply been: 1) I buy for pleasure, and 2) I buy for speculation, then we'd probably have a no brainer, albeit one that still warrants further alternatives.

The "sneeky" implication in the juxtaposition of the 'than' clauses suggests that if you value something as a collectible you somehow don't like lighthouses. It doesn't really come out and say that (here's where the "more" word come into play) but imo thats the way it can come across.

I doubt there are more than a handful of people who buy Harbour Lights for the primary purpose of making a profit off of them and whose enjoyment of real lighthouses in marginal. With the questions posed as they are, its a rigged deck.

Throughout the later history of these forums (say the last 6-8 months) its been fascinating to watch threads that diametrically oppose 'collectibles or value appreciation' and 'love of lighthouses' as if these are somehow contradictory. I don't much care for an approach that pits these views against one another, and I don't mind saying so.

Rant mode off,

Gosh Art,

I don't have a clue or comment about your motives.

But in the future I'll give your messages the benefit of the doubt and try not to read much into their meanings.

As far as your therapist crack goes, a lot of amusing zingers come to mind. However I think its better if you (and all of us) refrain from making personal comments about people. That discourages discussion.

I agree, Tim, and I'm sorry. Sometimes my fingers, like my mouth, run ahead of my brain. What I said I said in jest; it was not intended as a serious jab. Although I can see now how it could be taken that way, I didn't think so at the time I had written it. Humblest apologies.

Oh, boy. I hope it has not come to the point where we must censor what we feel and/or say here. Either self-censor or censor by group is not what I would want. Sure some of us here have a strange sense of humor, but I would hope that we are able to tell the difference between laughing at ourselves and being hurtful toward others. I have not been here as long as some of the posters and I have not met anyone in person, but I feel that I can tell just from the way the messages are worded when someone is trying to be funny. I feel I can tell each persons personality from the way they word their messages. I would hope that we would not be afaid to say just what we want to about anything without someone getting upset.
Life is full of all sorts of people and we learn how to deal with them in person, so why can't we learn to deal with each other here? Let's just accept one other and continue with our comments as before.

Hey Doc,

I edit my own posts often and for a variety of reasons. I don't consider this censorship.

What I have edited out does not change the essential nature of my posting, and being non-essential, it should have been left out from the start. I believe that I overstepped the bounds a little here, thought better of it, and made amends. I hope that we can grant each other the opportunity to reverse our embarrasing mistakes rather than preserve them here for posterity.

I have always felt accepted here, no matter how caustic I have been, and no matter how off-center my opinions may be. In well over 600 postings, I have never once been censored, never once felt that my opinions were unwelcome (albeit that they are sometimes unpopular).

For the record: If I didn't think that I should have revised the message, then I would not have done so. No one made me do this. No one ever even suggested it to me. I call this a purely voluntary revision, not censorship.

I hope you are now as comfortable with this as I am.

Now, Where were we? A? B?

Hi Art -
I have no problem with what you did in editing your post. I only made my comment on that because of other things happening here in the forums with some other people. I was and am only concerned that we have to be on our 'best' behavior here and that we can't be ourselves. You never have to edit anything you say to me, I don't get mad, I don't get even, I just cry, which causes problems with my keyboard. Anyway enough said.

Oh, by the way - my therapist is upset with the group here. I have not been visiting him as often since I have been spending time here. Tee, Hee.
