I wasn't too excited when I learned that Harbour Lights was going to make four versions of one light and have them all be limited editions. Paying $236 for four of basically the same light wasn't my idea of a way to spend funds budgeted for HLs.
Then after reading Randy Kremer's post about Fort Tompkins, I started to give it some very serious thought and decided that it might be a good idea to participate in this retail expiriment. What have I got to lose? I was already going to buy one for $59, what's another three for $177? I'll tell you what it is, it's an investment.
Fort Tompkins as a set of four seasons will increase in value far beyond the initial expenditure of $236. You can't say that with every HL release that is now available at retail pricing.
It will be interesting to see what each individual season Fort Tompkins will be worth in the future. The real question is what will a set of the four seasons be worth?
Gazing into the "It's Only Money" crystal ball shows the individual Fort Tompkins will hold its value and may sell for as much as $10-$15 over retail in three years. Further revelations from the crystal ball reveals a complete set of four seasons of Fort Tompkins selling for as much as $400, plus shipping and handling.
Don't buy all four if you can't justify the expense. Buy one so you'll have it. Take the other $177 you just saved and buy three different LE's to add to your collection. If you can afford to spend $236 on four of them, by all means do it. You will be making a good investment besides owning another piece of Harbour Lights history.
Randy and I have already made the committment. Who else is going to join the "Fort Tompkins Four-of-a-Kind" club, or will the majority give the opportunity a "royal flush"?
