In another topic, there was discussion about Holy Grail Harbour Lights.
A quote by Daniel got me thinking:

Here's a couple of questions? The numbers listed are Cape Hatteras, Burrows, Coquille, Portland Head, Southeast Block, and the Southern Belles. Are these HLs and variations, the staple of a collection? Are there others you would include? Do you have all of them in your collection?

Let's discuss what we think about the core of this type of collection. Obviously this is very subjective so what are your thoughts?

Paul beat me to it! I've always thought that the original 17 would be the core of any collection. Having said that, however, I only have 101, 104, 109, and 115. In the past, when I have tried to purchase the original 17, they were way out of my price range! frown

The core of my collection - and I bet I will get a lot of arguments about that - are the 12 British LLOMs

That is how it all started, they were my first, and to me they are the most important pieces.

speaking of "Holy Grail Harbour Lights"...

Soon, those of us who participated in the opportunity to include a piece or two from the "Founders Collection" should be able to say that these pieces between Nos. 2-10 are part of the "Holy Grail of Harbour Lights"!

There is only one HL that should be considered the "Holy Grail" of Harbour Lights. That piece is the extremely rare HL 102 Cape Hatteras (thin tower). With only 266 cast, and Lord knows how many are still in one piece, it is the rarest of the rare.

If I had to name a second runner-up, it would be HL111, Coquille River. They don't come cheap but can be had for a much fairer price today than a few years back. A lot of collections would be complete if the collector could scoup up the HL111.

I know HL108 was mentioned but Burrows Island just didn't hold its secondary market value like HL111 Coquille and the HL102R Cape Hatteras (thick tower). Southeast Block, Portland Head, and the Southern Belles are great to own and could be considered the "core" pieces to purchase while the secondary market is down. Hopefully, the secondary market will rise again because I have multiples in stock except for Coquille and Cape Hatteras.

I finally purchased Southeast Block. I kept having bad luck with that one. At one time, it was too pricey, and then I was ripped off badly when I got it at a more affordable price. I finally got a good deal from another CF member and that completed my SE Block collection. I would love to get my hands on a St. Augustine! As for Cape Hatteras, the only one I own, and will ever own, is a GAL.

I would think the basic core collection would have to inlcude the original 17 pieces.

I would say the premium core collection would be the original 17 plus the ten rarest pieces listed in the Offical Collectors Guide.

The ultimate collection would be every LE releases.

For our core collection, there are three that we are still seeking:
1) Original Cape Hatteras LE
2) Coquille Rive LE
3) Split Rock LE with MI flag.

That would complete our core collection of the first 17 and the one variation most important to me personally.

They're out there. A recent SEBlock I got for $48 but arrived with a chimney loose because they didn't wrap the interior of the HL box. The numerous photos showed it connected. A CH2 recently went for 162.

As one of the original collectors, we were very fortunate in the fact that we were able to purchase all the LEs at retail price including 102, 111 and 108 smile We do have a few variations but not all as that is not an interest of ours

I have mixed feelings about the gold pieces being considered as the ultimate HL collectible. I have one gold piece in my collection, Cape St. George, that Lorna won at the regional in Connecticut. Yes, it is rare. Yes, you just don't see these for sale. Yes, it may or may not be worth more than a Coquille LE, but it is a specialty item.

I'm willing to bet there are more collectors seeking the HL 111 or an HL 102R than looking for gold HL's. Collectors talk frequently about the dream of adding HL 111 or HL 102R to their collection, but how often do you hear people talking about their ultimate dream is to add a gold HL to their collection?

I didn't think much of the gold LEs (what are my odds) until I was lucky enough to win one. I didn't think much of the Original 17 in 1999, they were not as detailed as the newer ones. Why would anyone want an inaccurate sided (ugly)Coquille?
I'll never be able to afford to acquire Southern Belles, CH2, etc.
Those were all former opinions that have changed for me in my collecting years.
During the past 10 years, I've been educated here, acquired a taste (that darn Younger dust), enjoyed the quest, etc that makes us all Harbour Lights Collectors.

I remember being like all the newbies first here. I'm collecting only local lights, then lights I've been to, then NE Lights, then Atlantic Coast Lights, oh Louisiana's right there, and so on. I always hate it when someone asks how many do you have? then they let you off the hook - Do you have them all? No Way! eek

Just My Opinion

I can see where my collecting habits are headed. I've already passed local lights & different area lights. Next is being an autoship customer, then start looking for the rare pieces. eek

Well, Grace, that's probably the clean-up version of what Sue calls my collection..

What I call it is the "The Official Collectors Guide to Harbour Lights Images" since the Guide is basically is a visual inventory of my collection.. I think John would probably agree!!

If I could have a choice between an original Cape Hatteras, or a Coquille River , or a Split Rock MI I'd turn the all down for 1 of 2 Point Vincente. I've yet to see a Point Vincent on eBay or anywhere else besides The Green Book Guide. The owner has the Holy Grail of Harbour Lights as far as I'm concerned.

I forgot about Point Vicente. Only two in existence and I think we may be able to establish where one of them is if the collector from South Carolina kept it after his winning bid of $10,300 at the First Collector's Reunion in 1997. Where is Point Vicente #2? Lord only knows. Perhaps a member of the Younger Family kept it. Perhaps the original sculptor kept it. Maybe Harry Hines has it. Perhaps a member of the CF may be able to enlighten us as to it's current owner.

Point Vicente is the rarest of the rare I guess, but there maybe another piece just as rare. What was the piece that Fred Kuhlman won at auction at the Baltimore Reunion? I'm only guessing but was it an original prototype of MacQuarie that was substantially different from the existing model of HL 197? I think Fred, (God Bless his soul!), donated over $5,000 for that one-of-a-kind HL.

Perhaps someone else who attended the Baltimore Reunion will remember exactly the piece Fred purchased and the purchase price.

The second Vicente is in the hands of the person who helped HL with the Vicente information in producing it.. Our friend in South Carolina still has the one she won at the auction at the first reunion..

Fred with the MacQuarie he won in the auction at the Reunion! There are a couple of forum members behind Fred in this images..

This is probably the more rare of the two never produced pieces since there is only one of these in existence as far as anyone knows. This piece is from Fred Kuhlman's collection.

Paul's collection is 'complete' PLUS.

It may be the best displayed collection of Harbour Lights on the planet.

And for the past several years the latest releases are all APs.

In the Collectors Guide when listing the rarest HLs, I distinguished between pieces that had been released to dealers for sale to collectors and pieces like the Point Vicente and Macquarie which were Paint Samples, but never put in production.

Paul also has a unique Montauk Point which apparently did have some pieces released for sale. He'll post a photo of the two versions of the Montauk Point Glow here to illustrate the differences.

As I remember it, (being a loser in the bidding), Fred won with a bid of $10,000. How times have changed!! There is also at least one other "one-of-a-kind" which is the first Kilalea (sorry about spelling) which was never produced. Proceeds benefitted the Great Lakes Lighthouse group...Frank Carbone NELL

The OE Montauk (center) that they decided not to produce!! The OE they did produce is on the left and the LE is on the right..

I can tell I'm still very much a newbie.

First what is so special about the Macquarie piece?

Second did Fred win the Point Vicente piece in an auction or was the second piece given to him?

Point Vicente was auctioned off in 1997 in San Diego at the first Reunion, winner Betty O'Brien for $10,000.. Fred won the MacQuarie in 1998 at the Providence Reunion for more than $10,000..

The Vicente is one of only two ever made and Harbour Lights has never produced any LE of Point Vicente.

MacQuarie is one of one made then Harry changed the design before production of the HL197.

Fred's MacQuarie is on the left and the HL197 MacQuarie that was produced is on the right in Dave's image of the two versions..

Great pics, Paul! The MacQuarie Fred won at auction is one of the rarest I've ever seen in person. The old "Bill & Kim Auctions" were not only entertaining but profitable for charity. You could always count on something rare and collectible being offered.

Wasn't there an Anchor Bay "first-cast" but never produced of the Edmund Fitzgerald auctioned off at the 2005 reunion? I remember seeing the piece, the memory fades as to whether it was auctioned or not

Wouldn't you say that piece would be up there with the Pt Vicente and the MacQuarie, especially as it is an Anchor Bay. How many rare ABs are there?
