This afternoon I walked into a Harbour Lights dealer looking for some of the newer pieces and came across a Gray's Harbor variant. I was so excited I almost bought it on the spot. After I settled down a bit, I inspected it closely and found an obvious chip located on the roof over the lantern facing the front of the piece. The wind came out of my sails and I made the decision not to purchase it...I figured the extra collectability of the variant would be offset by the damage done to the piece. I was wondering what the opinion was of other members of this forum...would you have bought it or not?

Wise decision.

I certainly may be wrong but I don't think the variant in Gray's Harbor adds much to the collectibility of the piece.I personally don't buy chipped pieces but might change my mind if it were a Cape Hatteras!

Doc John, I also believe you made a wise decision.

My first criterion for the purchase of any piece that I am considering buying is the condition of the piece itself. I've fudged on box condition, box number, and paperwork, but condition is paramount.

I also prefer to buy the accurate version of the piece rather than an inaccurate variation. If I happened to stumble into a rarity at retail (e.g., a "MuLkilteo"), I would seek the best price for it, then buy a regular Mukilteo plus some of the rarer pieces with the proceeds.

Personally, I experience no pride in ownership of "freaks", and would certainly not pay extra for one. I don't mind the variations that I do happen to get, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get one. To each his own here, of course.

As real estate demands location, location, location, the platitude governing the purchase of a collectible should be condition, condition, condition.

The decision appears to be unanimous! Thanks for all the input. I think looking for rare pieces makes collecting a little more fun and I don't necessarily view variants as "Freaks"...look at Coquille River!
