Third Coquille variation discovered by Daniel
In 1997 at the first Harbour Light Reunion, John Chidester discovered that there were two Coquille variations. They were the:
1. 3-panel door with the green mullion on the lighthouse light. 2. 4-panel door with the white mullion on the lighthouse light.
Having logged 18 different Coquille on ebay I have discover that there is an other version and it is:
3. 3-panel door with the WHITE mullion on the lighthouse light. At this time I have seen three coquilles with this variation.
No felt variations found at this time.

Great find, Dan! It's nice of you to take the time and discover things we never knew about our collectibles. I often wonder how many pieces of late may have slight variations that no one has yet discovered. I know they all come from the same molds but what about paint variations? How do the artists paint thousands of pieces exactly the same? How do paint batches produce the exact shades of red, blue, green, etc.? I often thought it would be interesting if Harbour Lights ordered a paint variation for a very small percentage of a particular new release, every once in awhile. Put the variations right in with dealer orders and see if anyone ever notices. We often concentrate on our older HL treasures but does anyone check every new piece for possible differences? Bob

Bob Good point about the new ones. Quality control has greatly improved. Especially after HL switched from Canada to Malaysia. I doubt we will see artist preferences anymore like we did with the pre-95’s . The latest discovery on paint variations for modern HL is the Pensacola Roof Color. This was brought to my attention on ebay. Two were for sale, side by side with different shades of brown, one dark and the other light. At first I thought that the roof on the one was just faded. But Rich told me he has both color variations. I started to follow ebay and did notice more of the light roof versions. I think the dark brown is the more latter and common one.
Yes Bob I would like to see a paint variation released of a particular model. Maybe around 500 with green water.

I have collected all of the lighthouses that Harbour Lights switched production from Malaysia to China and surprisingly there are very few variations in them..
HL155 Bald Head, NC (Malaysia) retired 1/98 #314 Signed HL155 Bald Head NC ( China) retired 1/98 #7629 Signed
HL160 Cape Meares, OR (Malaysia) retired 12/31/99 #236 Signed HL160 Cape Meares, OR (China) retired 12/31/99 #4754 Signed
HL166 Scituate, MA (Malaysia) retired 5/98 #568 Signed HL166 Scituate, MA (China) retired 5/98 #6885 Signed
HL179 Toledo Harbor, OH (Malaysia) retired 12/31/99 #1349 Signed HL179 Toledo Harbor, OH (China) retired 12/31/99 #5491 Signed
HL186 Concord, MD (Malaysia) retired 12/31/99 #4425 Signed HL186 Concord, MD (China) retired 12/31/99 #6226 Signed
HL191 Grand Traverse, Ml (Malaysia) retired 6/99 #543 Signed HL191 Grand Traverse, Ml (China) retired 6/99 #5087 Signed
HL242 Round Island, MS (Malaysia) #14 Signed HL242 Round Island, MS (China) #4793 Signed
The Concord and the Scituate changed to the metal lanternroom rails and the paint job on the Cape Meares has quite a few differences, but overall most of them made the switch in countries without major variations..
Onward to The Land of the Midnight Sun!

Like I said back in January:
"I also wish they'd make a deliberate variation just to see if it pumps some life back into collecting again...like maybe make a few hundred Cape Arago, ORs with green water and quietly slip them into circulation..."
